Streaming Videos

Good Afternoon,

A Swank representative came to Harnett County Schools on Friday.  She told our folks it is fine to stream videos from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc.  Most of our teacher devices do not have a built-in optical drive.  So, I have been asked by one of our high schools if they can purchase a school Netflix account. 😱I have posted my reply below.  I am curious to hear your thoughts.

As hard as we work to ensure we are copyright compliant, I know sometimes we may fail, not intentionally.  If we have school accounts, how can we make certain our teachers are showing movies that are copyright compliant under the SWANK license?  Keep in mind that Netflix can identify your school by the user account and IP address. I wonder if having school accounts would put a target on us?  However, I know many teachers are using Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime Videos, etc.  By purchasing the SWANK license, we are protecting them for the most part.  I will reach out to other counties in the meantime to see how they are handling accounts that allow video streaming.

Is Swank your law firm?

 

Netflix/hulu/Amazon prime all have wording that refers to personal, non-commercial, private use.

Ah, if I actually read, looks like Swank is re-licensing vendor?

It does not appear to me that EVERY streaming film is included, plus it is not a copyright issue with using Netflix, Hulu, et.al. it is terms of service.

If you look at the streaming films included on Swank's website, the licensing appears to be about the same as it is for "traditional" sources, meaning no current, popular films.
