Sync disabled

Any idea what setting I can change to fix "sync disabled"

Not getting emails unless I manually poll.

I have the new samsung note 10 plus

In the account settings there are settings for retrieving mails and there you can tell k9 how often to poll for mails.

I have them set for 1 min. It seems to work for a little while then goes back to sync disabled.

Then my guess is that your cellphone has settings to optimize apps for power or a way to define which apps are allowed to use background data and one of them disallows sync.

In Android settings, select Battery, on the menu select Battery Optimization, and put K-9 under not optimized.

For the S10 and probably other recent Samsung devices, this option is no
longer available in the Battery menu, but can be found by searching for
"optimize battery usage" in the search bar on the main settings menu.

Then you need to change "Apps not optimized" to "All" so the list
includes the "optimized" apps, i.e. those that are put to sleep
automatically. Then you find k9 in that list, and turn off
optimization.

It probably also helps to go to Settings > Connections > Data usage >
Wi-Fi data usage and allow background data for k9. Same for mobile
data usage.

Another thing to check: Settings > Apps > App Info > k9 > Battery >
turn on the 'Background activity' option if needed.

This help page for the Signal messaging app gives good instructions
for a variety of Android versions, although it doesn't show how to
get to the battery optimization screen on the S10:

Should I select poll when connecting for push. I selected poll every min. I want emails to come in asap without manually syncing

It could be that the server doesn't like being polled so frequently, and blocks you off.

Consider polling every 15 minutes or so, if you must poll.

I've used K9 for years. No problem till recently. I got a replacement phone on a note 8 and problem started after I setup new phone. And still having issue with new note 10

Polling every minute does not sound reasonable.

I think that what I'm doing is the standard approach:

1) push

2) poll when connecting for push

Once connected, new mail arrives via the usual IMAP IDLE scheme (push).
When first connecting -- or reconnecting after network loss or change --
polling finds out what happened while away.

This works 99% great, with the problems being:

some people's phones don't really do push because their OS won't let
them. This hsas to be fixed in the OS.

It seems to be possible to connect, poll, and then set push, resulting
in a tiny window where a new message arrives after poll checks the
state but before push, so that message doesn't arrive until the next
message arrival or the next poll. This is highly rare.


I don't know the details of your vendor flavor of android, but it really
sounds like you have an overly aggressive OS that thinks your mail
program shouldn't be connected all the time, and you just have to figure
out how to deal with that. Maybe you can install lineage :-)

I am having a hard time understanding your question.

If you are talking about an email composed in k-9 that needs to be
conveyed to the first-hop MTA for eventual delivery, it does that when
you click send, and if that fails, it sits in outbox. You can look in
outbox and select "send messages" from the menu. I am not really clear
on the retry behavior if you don't manually try that.

If you are talking about incoming mail, k-9 connects to IMAP, checks the
INBOX to make sure the local copy matches the server, and then does
IDLE, and waits to be told of arriving messages. At least if the OS
doesn't break things.

If you aren't using IMAP, then you should :-) And I can't help you.
