Create an application specific password to use with k-9

Just wondering - how do you do that? Gmail sometimes warns me that some application (K-9) is accessing my mail insecurely. (I am using IMAP over TSL-SSL or something, don't remember the exact details.) When I turn Gmail's 2-factor authentication, K-9 can no longer access Gmail.

Thanks. Then how do you put that into K-9? Use it instead of the
existing email password?

Thanks,

Google Accounts -> security -> Use your phone to sign in (under signing in to google)-> Enabled.

Open K-9, type mail id and password. gets the errors mentioned in the Images, click continue.

This is exactly the problem I'm having (just posted here:https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/k-9-mail/AlxzO5uCh8I ). Two-step authentication on, using an app password, but still getting authentication errors.

It was working (briefly), then stopped...

You need that allow less secure apps in the Google mail.

I want to mention that this "less secure" wording is more of a marketing ploy than a reflection of reality. Goodie wants you to use their mail app, which presumably lets Google collect more info about you.

Sure.

But everything on K9's forum, on their github issue pages, etc seems to imply that you do not need to enable this if you are using 2FA/app passwords, only if you are using a vanilla password. If this has changed, it would be good for it to be documented somewhere.

No, this isn't the answer... you actually *can't* turn on less secure apps within Google if you have 2FA turned on.

The answer should be generating and using an app-specific password for K-9. I don't remember if it also requires the "less secure" setting.

Yup, it totally should be :-) Sadly, it isn't.

It seems that if google servers are rejecting their app-specific
password, after it worked for a while, the issue is probably on their
side and whoever is using g-suite ought to contact their support.

Other mail apps aren't rejecting my app-specific passwords, just K9.

Besides, Google's policy is basically "If you're using an app not made by Google and can't sign in, that app's sign-in process might not be secure. If there's a corresponding Google app, we recommend using it instead. For example, if you can't sign in to an email app, use the Gmail app." - so I imagine there will be no help there.

I'm keen to keep using K9, but can't really see a way forward here.
