Is there a way to stop K-9 from saving sent messages to Sent Items for a specific IMAP account? I want to still subscribe to that folder and be able to view its contents.

Context: We were just switched to Office365 and apparently when 'Save copies of messages in Sent Items folder' is selected in Outlook (on by default) and then use an application other than Outlook to access IMAP, you get duplicates in that folder. The way to stop this apparently is to turn off saving outgoing messages to Sent Items in your application (eg Thunderbird). You can still subscribe to the folder to view its content, and single copies are saved into the folder by the server, but you don't get Thunderbird generating a duplicate. K-9 doesn't seem to have this option to de-select. Turning off 'Save copies of messages in Sent Items folder' is not a good idea because then when I use Outlook to send messages it won't save a copy at all.

Thanks.

There has been no reply to this. Does this mean there is no way to stop K-9 from saving sent messages to Sent Items? This seems like an odd omission.

Apparently this is caused by the SMTP server within the Office365 server.
Traditionally, the MUA is responsible for copying sent messages to the Sent
folder. But some SMTP servers are now doing this, notably Office365. I
wonder if there's a capabilities item in the SMTP greeting to indicate
whether this is being done? Then the MUA could deal with it automatically.

I can see how not having to upload a message twice makes is more efficient and less error-prone. The MUA knowing what to do would be ideal. Alternatively (or possibly in addition to this), the MUA should offer an option for copying messages to Sent Items (like Thunderbird and I am sure most applications).

In Account Settings > Folders > Sent folder, you can set the folder
to save outgoing messages in to "-NONE-" (the first option).

This worked. I was looking for an on/off option around the SMTP setup and missed this. Many thanks.
