K-9 Mail is suddenly saying my email credentials are incorrect

Starting today, the email client that I am using on my Android phone (K9 Mail) is suddenly giving an "Authentication Failed" notification whenever I open it. If I click on the notification it displays the saved incoming server settings, and even if I then reenter my Gmail password rather than accepting the existing **** one that is hidden with asterisks, and click Next, it then says "username or password incorrect". But the password I enter is my correct Google password, and the username is my email address.

However, the built in Android email client is still retrieving my Gmail emails without problems, so it's not Android or my phone, it's just my K9 Mail email client that is being blocked. How can I get to the bottom of this and fix it?

NB - If I go to https://myaccount.google.com/security, and look under "Third-party apps with account access", K-9 Mail is no longer listed there. But I can't see any way to add it.

Update: K-9 Mail has started retrieving mail again, as suddenly and as inexplicably as it had stopped doing so previously. It's still not listed under "Third-party apps with account access" at  https://myaccount.google.com/security, though.

It was probably because you logged in with browser. That sometimes unlocks gmail.

Hi Andy

I didn't log in with my browser until after K-9 Mail stopped working.

And it didn't start working again until several hours after I logged in with my browser.

I do have the same problem, all of a sudden the app doesn't sync Gmail any more, the 2 other accounts do still work. It started on May 1,I changed nothing. I'm using this app for many years already and I love it.

I recognize your comment. I had the same experience, without any notice by F Droid, where it doesn't seem to figure anymore, just like that. I am always in favour of open source, but a warning before removing an app would be polite. The Playstore download did not work either.
The 'special' app-password Google generated did not work.
Although I love K-9 for its simple and sturdy design I am happy with Fair Email as its replacement. The send-button with encryption reminders is well thought of.

And my K-9 app, also without any changes... is syncing Gmail just fine.

For me it works, too.

If Google is testing something new/is broken only for a few users?
