Hi folks!

Long time reader, first time writer.

Has anyone implemented a badging system for the maker skills or fabrication techniques they use at their school? Or one step backwards, do folks go as far to identify a scope of skills for making at their schools?

Context: We're a K-8 school about to add a new Engineering Studio, and I'm wondering if anyone has figured out a way to track safety training, integrated use of techniques, etc. with a wide range of students. I haven't yet found a badging system that looks tried and true at the K-8 level. Plus, I'm seeing hesitancy to define targeted maker skills in anything that might look like it's leading to assessment.

Any badging system examples or wisdom about scope of skills to share?

With gratitude,

-Matt

Matt
I am in the process of working on a kind of certification for our students.
The idea is that students will have online material and then an online test (Google forms, to keep track of every student) .
Once the test is approved, we will have a practical session where the students need to show excellent work and safety habits with the tools.
In my country we have an accident preventionist, we have already assessed the tools' possible dangers, and this will serve as a base for our student and staff induction in our creative space.
Hope this helps

Hi Matt,

I ran a badging program pilot for 5-8th grade classes in the IDEA Lab when I was still at Catherine Cook. It was successful, particularly as an additional motivator in lieu of assessments, etc. I wrote a brief how-to that talks about it.

Hope the helps,
JD

Great question and was going to post something similar!
I am currently in the process of creating a high school version of a badge system for the makerspace apprenticeship program. Similarly, students have to complete the online training and then do a project and take a google form quiz. Students will then earn a badge they can put on a vest (inspired by girls scouts).

Is anyone willing to share their resources so far? Here is my very preliminary google site? Specifically the quizzes.

Hi All,

I have developed a variety of Makerspace Badge Activity Sequences for both k-8 and HS. Here is a link to a K-8 Sequence that includes Level 1, 2 and Pro Badge Activities.
Another way we are distinguishing between levels is by creating the badges out of different mediums.. so Level 1-2 might be a pin type badge made with a button badge maker while the Pro Badge is a Laser Cut Badge made out of wood. Let me know if you would like to discuss further and we can set up a time to chat,
Thanks
MM

This may be of interest for HS:
New Collar Digital Badges, which are issued by the North American Digital Fabrication Alliance for digital fabrication and advanced manufacturing skills including digital design and 3D printing. These badges are approved by the U.S. Department of Labor as the formal training component in a registered apprenticeship for 3D Printing Technicians. https://newcollarnetwork.com/digital-badges
