Hi fellow Maker Ed peeps-

I wanted to ask you all ( my trustedcolleagues) l if you think this idea has legs ( or wheels) About a year ago I built a Maker Cart and it worked pretty good so I built a better one and dubbed it the Mobilemaker:ED Cart. Now I have a working prototype and I was thinking about producing for schools without a lot of space, which is very real here in NYC. But I'm not sure if it has much use in a suburban, or rural environment, and it seems like most schools have already got some kind of makerspace going. My question is, should I be pursuing this concept for schools outside of urban areas- is there a need? Take a look and any thhoghts would be very much apprciated.
Thanks, John Jefferys

Maybe you could try a Kickstarter to gauge interest?
Be warned though that (unless you've done it before) that a successful Kickstarter is a blessing and a curse, particularly if you already have a day job...

Good thought, and good advice, yes my day job working on ed programs and advocacy would be in trouble if I had another big commitment.

I think there could be a lot of applications for this.  Schools who want to introduce some making but aren't ready to commit to a full lab could get one of these and see how it works.

Are you also including equipment instructions and sample lesson plans?

We are doing a hybrid where we use carts for push-in for some grades and bring students to the space for other grades. This is also about student safety, as well as "sizing" the tools for the students.

This was definitely one of the ways we thought it might be useful, as a soft introduction to the Makerspace idea without commitment to a full classroom conversion. I wondering if it think it could be practical to make a rotation every few weeks to a different subject, or grade level, and roll it into the next host classroom? Or is that impractical?

The Cart comes with a 3-day training session on the equipment, and a starter curriculum which introduces the students to each machine as well as some design thinking challenges. Additional training and curriculum packages are available.

Thanks for your input- John

I completely agree with you on the scale. This cart would be intimidating to the K-5 students. I have targeted this at the grade 6-12 size, and even there I have been very conscious of the hand-to-tool relationships, I find this set of cordless power tools, the Craftsmen nextec line, in 12v which keeps them light and the grips are all smaller than normal powertools.

Thanks for your input, John
