Using eyelets in Lycra/spandex

This summer I've been playing with tensile fabric structures stretched within tetrahedral frameworks. http://www.thingiverse.com/Fredbartels/designs

I've been tying knots directly around the fabric but wonder if using eyelets (little grommets) might be easier for kids. Anyone have experience using them with spandex?

I sew a lot and have a degree in textiles. I have not put grommets in spandex but have a couple of ideas. 1). The grommet kits at regular fabric stores (ie dritz brand) suck for the most part. I have made a personal vow that if I ever want to put grommets in something, I will take it to a sail shop. 2). Stretch fabrics will tend to pull out  of the metal part of the grommet if put under tension (especially if it is a cruddy grommet) You could play with this to see if you could find a happy medium. I've seen this with knits that don't have spandex. Your project is very cool :-). If you have a sewing machine, buttonholes with structural support might work.

I haven't used this one on lycra but I have had very good luck with the Woodruff hole punch and grommets.  I've used it on cloth, cardboard, and PCB boards (as a makeshift via) and I always get consistent grommets.  I like that it is a one piece grommet which minimizes the potential mess-ups from trying to align the pieces.
