Hello!

I am wondering if anyone has any ideas on implementing a word wall for their makerspace? I teach 6-8th graders that rotate every 6 weeks, so by the time they learn the technical vocabulary for my class, they're on to another class. Anyone in the same boat?

I'll have to do some digging but maybe someone can beat me to it. I saw somewhere a great "tinkering words" wall where each tile that displayed the word was made using the tool or technique it described. I'll see if I can find more examples! I have my students year-round but for only 40 minutes, every other day. It's really hard to keep momentum and get things done but we do our best!

Yes, the Exploratorium's Tinkering Studio has this. Not sure if it is what Kelsey was referring to, but here you go:

I loved their display so much that I made one for my makerspace.

I made a digital word wall, mostly for grade 1, never really finished:  http://ourwordwall.com/

Choose "Select a public wall to view", then t2014, and the view wall button.  you can add words, it speaks also.  Can import and overlay your own picture.

Nice project I never finished.  Anyone interested in collaborating, developing, publishing?

Hi all! Thanks for all the suggestions. I liked the idea of having texture for the word wall, but due to the time crunch, I did the next best thing: pictures! I think in the future I'd love to make a word wall with the items on it.

I just took them off of Google. This will hopefully help my ELs in identifying common items as well as an aid for the Gen Ed students.

For my High school classes, I had a Maker Hall of Fame, highlighting safety.

The kids all wanted their photos up but had to be demonstrating safe practices They mostly all made it and I slipped in cleaning up, helping each other etc with key words but made it seem special/exclusive right at first.  I saved the photos on our CMS so they would have access.  I had just started that last term.

Very little work with great results.
