Hi everyone,
Thanks so much to all of you who took time to answer my many questions about the logistics of creating a makerspace at my school! Here is one more quick question.

What is the name of your "Makerspace/Fablab?"

Thanks again for all of your help.

Right now, mine is still called Woodshop. While most of the fabrication is still physical, we have added digital making as well in the form of Makey-Makeys, 3D printers and assorted electronics. So I feel that the name is outdated and have been shortening it to just "Shop" lately.

Trying to figure that out now...it's a Makerspace but also a small production studio
Possibilities are :
Production hive, imagination station, creation station, maker zone, rebel lab (our mascot is the "rebel"), the tech house, imaginarium

Kids have a posted list they add to until someone decides to put it to a vote!

Our makerspace is currently called "over there in the corner" (of the science room).  :)

In the next couple of years, the plan is to build a new space, and it will be called the QLab.

Several years ago, when I pitched the idea of a maker room, I wanted to name the space after one of my mentors from long ago, Woody Vasulka. He was an incredible mechanical and video maker.

He told stories of growing in his native Czechoslovakia and pulled parts out of downed WWII airplanes and building stuff. He could build anything. So I wanted to call the space "The Woody", but that suggestion got shot down for obvious reasons.

Also the "Wood Shed" got shot down for its negative connotation.

An administrator named it the "iStudio," which I will not use. In my heart and mind, it will always be the "Woody".

I love getting to hear all the names people have been coming up with. At my school (Berkeley Carroll in Brooklyn, NY) we call our makerspace the STEAM Hub. Right not this space only exists in our lower school. But thanks to a bunch of construction in the works, the upper school (mid and high school aged students) will have a similar space available to them.

We are the Bourn Idea Lab, named after a former robotics mentor Doug Bourn.

Other names I've heard of for these types of spaces: Makery (at Burke's in SF), Creativity Lab (at Lighthouse Community Charter School), iLab/innovation lab (Nueva), or even just Fab Lab.

Cool question. At Hillbrook we inherited the term idea lab from the original concept of an open space for kids to design their own classroom. The space has evolved in the last two years into the middle school maker space so we call it the iLab for making and I have also played with the name MakeSpace for t.e.a.m.s.  (as we still have movable furniture for kid designed work stations and projects that take place here really encourage integrated disciplinary problem solving with tech, engineering, art, math and science).

We have no formal name yet, but I think of our nascent area as the "Falcon Fab Lab." One of my many "back burner" projects is to make a sign with each letter produced by a different fab technique..... (3-d print, laser cut, laser etch, electronics, cardboard,  etc. - perhaps with some spots just printed on the sign in anticipation of future options.)

We call our program the Creativity Lab - and we try to stress that it refers to the program more than the space.

Our process was to list adjectives and nouns and then thought about what name would make kids feel comfortable, willing to take risks, etc.  Even though it is a small part of the experience for kids, they do use the name - ("In the creativity lab we did...").  We also tried to balance the design/art side with the science tech side by choosing one word from each category we had created...

Our K-8 lab is called the Boiler Lab...where STEAM happens.
Grades 1-8 tech classes meet twice weekly throughout the year with units that explore, introduce, discover, adapt...fab, make, code...integrate technology.
We have two rooms/labs. The second computer lab works wonderfully in conjunction with the other lab activities.
In addition, middle school students are 1:1 with Chromebooks. There are computer and iPad centers in each grade Pre-K-5 classroom.
We are a GAFE school.

Recommend the following conferences (as well as BAISnet and this k-12 fablab group):
FABLearn, Transformative Laboratories, Stanford, CA
Constructing Modern Knowledge Institute, Manchester, NH
Design Do Discover, Castilleja Bourn Idea Lab, Palo Alto, CA...and all the speakers and schools represented there

We have an interim fablab/makerspace we call the Open Lab. This is a prototype space we are using to help guide our design of a new space. We call it the "Open Lab" to signify that when we transformed it from a Computer Lab, we weren't sure what it would be. We were open to experimentation and wanted to reflect that back to students.

About two years ago we were trying to fix on a name for the new space that was under conceptual development at our school at that time. (We hope to break ground in June 2015.) What is SO interesting is that we did something very similar to what Aaron described. We listed a bunch of words that came to mind through word association: innovation, idea, tinkering, think, STEAM, design, engineering, make, hack, invention, fabrication, discovery, etc. We then listed words for spaces: studio, lab, etc. We ended up with...Creativity Lab...for the same reasons Aaron listed! I subsequently learned about Lighthouse's Creativity Lab, of course. At first I wondered if we should change the name to be unique, but imagine if we all tried to come up with unique names! Now that I know more about Aaron and Lighthouse I am more humbled than anything else at the idea that we will have spaces with the same name. The only thing I would add, and it seems a bit silly really, is that we were attracted to the roundness or the word "creativity" and how it contrasts with the hard edges of the word "lab," both literally and figuratively. That is another way of expressing what Aaron said about the design/art side and the science/tech side.

What I am most interested in is what Aaron mentioned about a name for a *program* rather than a *space*. This really resonates with me. I have been struggling and struggling to find a name for the *program* our space supports/enables. Having worked in tech integration for so many years, the idea of creating a lab that might isolate or even position the learning that happens within it apart from the rest of the curriculum is troubling. For me, the goal is to change/impact teaching and learning in deep and integrated ways. I had not thought about using the same name to refer to the program as well as the space. Some might ask why a name for a program is needed at all...why not just call it learning? This is a fair point, but I also feel the need to name what I am trying to advance in order to be able to talk about it.

My question (should I start a new thread?) is about how you refer to the program that your fablab/makerspace supports?

I learn so much from this group.  Thank you!

Like Aaron, Diego and I have also been trying hard to get the message across to our faculty that the Bourn Idea Lab is both a physical space and a program. I think people are starting to get it.  A lot of our program does happen in the lab because that's where the tools are, but we also support making/building projects in the classrooms when kids don't need to actually come use the tools.

To echo Angi, we have spent a lot of energy emphasizing that we are more than just a cool place to build things.   As it is, people see the equipment and assume that is the extent of what is done in the space.

The name for the space can help broaden the perceived understanding of the purpose of the lab.  A name that evokes only building limits how other teachers perceive the space and can limit their interest in exploring projects in the space.

Other considerations in picking a name:

- How is it "verbified" or used as an adjective?  At Nueva they talk about "iLab" thinking.  This is similar to Bonnie's point of the name describing both a program and a physical space.  How would you want students and teachers describing projects facilitated by the space?  How do you want people to describe the way of thinking you're trying to encourage?

- When used in a sentence, people tend to shorten or truncate the name... longer names may be more descriptive, but think about how it will be used in a sentence if you want it to represent the program.

- I like a little ambiguity... iLab can be thought of as "innovation" or "idea"... which are both OK...

Of course, we inherited our name ;-)  Most people refer to our projects as "Bourn projects" which isn't very descriptive but isn't constraining and lets us define what that means...

I love this thread, and hope it stays alive!

Some of us were referring to our big space (under construction) as the "Invention Shop" for a while, but it didn't take with admin. "Official" communication just refers to it as "the big space in the new building that will have 3D printers," even though it will have over double the square footage of my house and of course lots more than 3D printers. SO excited to start using it... And hopeful that lots of other teachers and kids will be ready to dive into using it too! We're not super-far into the groundwork of preparing the community for how to use it.

I like the idea of incorporating the mascot into the name... We're "falcons," and "Falcon Idea Lab" sounds fun. "Falcon Flight Studio"?

Ours is the Design Den. Our mascot is the Honey Bear, so many of our spaces on campus are bear themed (the tech support help desk is the Bear Cave, our book store is the Bear Necessities, etc.)

Ours is the iLab, which I inherited. It feels a little Apple-y, but I always say the "i" can stand for lots of things (innovation, interdisciplinary, imagination, iteration, etc) and I do like that.

Our lab at Roxbury Latin is the IDEA Lab-- an acronym for Invention, Design, Engineering, and Art. I threw around innovation vs. invention in my head for a while, but I found that I much prefer the connotations of ingenuity and tinkering that come with "Invention" above the often business-like connotations of innovation. I'm a major believer in the importance of the "A" in STEAM, so I thought it was critical to include that in the name of the space as well.

Cheers,
