Greetings amazing colleagues,
Looking to write a mini-grant to fund materials to build portable pegboard marble maze setups. Has anyone made setups for their spaces who could give advice on or send pictures of various components and what they were made out of. Ramps, tubing, funnels, clever attachment or stand systems... Anything advice is much appreciated.
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

The standard instructional model is from the Tinkering Studio at the Exploratorium

This page has links to the materials and Instructables.

Hi Adam, while my science teachers use the marble run (pegboard) project for their physics project, I actually went the route of magnets and 3D designed/printed parts.

As part of a design thinking project with 7th graders, I had them design, prototype, test and ultimately 3D print components for their lower school buddies, where we recently installed a large metal wall for this purpose. I also built some smaller portable walls for the 7th graders to test on.

I went with magnets for ease of use for little kids, so they could make subtle adjustments to the pieces in order for the marble run to work.

Here are some pics and a bit of write up from my blog, latest post is at the top:

If you want to see what my science teacher does, below is a write up of that too, with pics and some video:

Good luck and have fun! If you need any further details, let me know.

Love it - can't wait to share these pics.

What materials and process did you use to adhere the magnets?

Also -  Noticed that you had tables that flip up into a white board?  Do you have more info on these. I've looked into these but soooo costly.  Did you buy or purchase them?

Hi Lucie, good old fashion glue gun for the magnets. They can fall off with a little too much play, but we encourage the kids to "handle with care". For this round, I had my 7th graders create "pads" in their 3D designs to accommodate the magnets, and the pads all had to align so that the model would rest flush against the wall. I might try next year to have them design recessed holes to place the magnets in. The finer details that went into the design really made this project fun. How do you design to use the least amount of support material? What is the best orientation for laying on the print bed? How do you make a marble run efficient, yet fun and challenging?

As for tables, we use a company called KI furniture. I also purchased some from Bretford but moved to KI because these tables have legs that swivel out when you flip the table up, allowing tables to nest tighter together for putting away. These particular tables don't have writable surfaces, but I have considered idea paint for them. We have writable walls all over so haven't felt the need to make the tables writable...yet. ;-)

Thank you, what exceptional advice from both of you!  Special thanks to John your inspirational project. It formed the basis of my grant. Amazing work. Maybe next year, if we get good at making these, my students can start fabricating setups for feeder elementary schools. Man, do I feel lucky to get to be a part of this amazing community!

Thanks for sharing everyone!  I am just about to start building two marble boards this week with a 7th/8th Making for Community class.  It is a gift for our Kinder classes using Instructables and Exploratorium links.  I really like the 3D files and appreciate the resources John!

Happy making,
Beth
