Hi,

I am pretty new at JupyterHub, and networking in general. I am trying to run JupyterHub on a virtual machine, but be able to access the web page that it generates from the computer the VM is on. This computer happens to be on a private network, so I tried to change the ip address in the JupyterHub config file, but no luck. I could really use some advice on which parts of the config file I should be changing, and what they should be. The end game here is to have JupyterHub running on the VM, and anyone on this private network will be able to create their own spawn of it with their own login. But for, now I am just trying to do that with one computer. Let me know if I need to go into anymore detail about this. I would greatly appreciate any help I can get!

Thank you,
Aliyah

Hi Aliyah,

Something that I think often confuses people is that the IP address you configure needs to be the IP address of the VM, not of your computer that you're trying to access it from. You're telling it which network interface to listen on. You can probably find this inside the VM by running a command like "ifconfig -a" . You may also need to configure its networking in the program that runs your VM (e.g. Virtualbox).

There are also some complexities with JupyterHub because it runs different processes which talk to each other, so you need to make sure you're configuring the right thing to listen externally. I'll let someone who's more familiar with Jupyterhub explain about that.
