Hi,
I've recently updated to Big Sur and opened my Jupyter lab, went on and imported numpy and got the following error:

This happens in notebook as well and does not happen on ipython.
I have reinstalled jupyter and updated to the latest ipython.
I have also tried importing `os` and `pandas` and this keeps on happening.
Anybody has any idea why this is happening?

This likely mean you need to reinstall Python itself.

Big Sur has been release about 2 weeks ago, it is expected to have bugs in it; Python 3.9.1rc1 has been released today and it might contain fixes for Big Sur; so you may need to wait for it to be release to update.

In general you may want to wait a few more weeks before upgrading OS, to make sure all issues are settled.

As this doesn't happen on python or ipython in general, just on Jupyter, I think this is more a Jupyter issue that an Apple issue don't you think?

Hi,
The problem they experience sounds like it results from Big Sur.  I have two thoughts.

First, I need Apple to work with Jupyter and it has been problematic to use it under Anaconda in the previous OS, Catalina.  It's never completely worked right.  I have a G9.  My older mac works flawlessly but Catalina has never done so.

So guess what? I upgraded it to Big Sur hoping that would fix the issues.  So it is very disappointing to find that things are getting worse.

Should I just throw the G9 away?   Go buy a good Windows system?

Second, and more importantly, Apple should know immediately that there is an issue. Of course, Apple should have people who test this. Maybe they have and maybe if we report the problem they already know a solution.  It's worth finding out?

If Apple changed something aand it broke then we would need to find out how that happened,

I kind of need this.   Catalina with its directory structure issues has not been nice for dealing with Anaconda in general  I can go without Anaconda.

I can't go without Jupyter.

Cheers,

Rich

Try installing Miniforge, which may support more
processors and operating systems than Anaconda.

When Apple released Big Sur they moved some libraries. Here's a gist that I used to set the CFLAGS and LDFLAGS for Big Sur:

I use pyenv. About 1.5 weeks ago, Homebrew's version of Python did not work on Big Sur.

I am not using conda for my installs.

You might want to try paperspace as a temporary stopgap if you have difficulty. https://www.paperspace.com/

Many thanks Carol,

You are – as always – an infinitely invaluable resource.

I don't like Apple changing some things; but here I must side on their
end; it's been three weeks since Big Sur has been released; and there
are so many components between their os and Jupyter that we can't put
the blame on them.
Maybe I'm getting to old, but I alway wait a few weeks month to update
OS because issues like this always arise. Also Jupyter/Anaconda is
likely far from the most installed application on Macs.

Apple seem to also be slowly opening up to open source; but this
process takes time.
