JupyterLab - how a widget can save its state?

Hi all!

I've created a widget for JupyterLab using https://github.com/jupyterlab/mimerender-cookiecutter

(export class OutputWidget extends Widget { ......)

How can I save it's state within notebook? 

The state changes after user interacts with the widget.

It is required to keep that state for subsequent notebook reopens.
