Jupyter (python) notebooks + lots of images with matplotlib

I use the subj with %matplotlib notebook.  When the number of images I display in some cell grows, the image canvas will be empty.  Maybe at some point it will display images, I never waited long enough though.  Anyone has a work around for this?
