Using R and Hbase with Jupyter Notebook

I am trying to use R through a Jupyter Notebook to connect to Hbase.  The package I am using is SparklyR.  However, I am having trouble connecting to Hbase.  I am not sure if SparklyR can be used outside of RStudio.  If this is possible can someone help me with the environment configuration?
