But I am pleased to see that Ariel is doing the "Verne Reading Day"
again between February 7th and 9th 2021 this time in a virtual format,
therefore could I ask if we have anything planned for that weekend and
if not, could I make a suggestion that can be organised very quickly and
done via Zoom?

You're welcome, Harry to organize something.

As the Forum has restarted this year, maybe some of the persons subscribed to this new Forum don't know about the Verne Reading Day.
We (the Hispanic Jules Verne Society) have been promoting and organizing Verne Reading Day since 2019 and this is the third edition.
This time, it will be in a virtual format. Any idea is welcomed.

Best thing will be to plan something between some of the members of the Forum and to meet, like Harry says, in a virtual platform, such as Zoom, Meet, etc and have a time together to read Verne.

Anyway, you're welcome to plan your own activities at home, with a bunch of friends, with other Vernians.

As every year, if you do something, please communicate with the Hispanic Jules Verne Society and send your photos, screenshots of the meetings and this year, even the video of the Reading Day, so we can publish it on our website.

See about other year's activities:

Best,
Ariel

My Zoom account can be used to have one or several Zoom meeting(s) between February 7 and 9. Or even a three-day long meeting. It's easy to schedule and I can communicate the meeting-id to the Forum. Just a meeting-id, no passcode. Please let me know the time and duration of such a meeting.

Yes, this is a wonderful idea. With some careful planning regarding time zones, this could be a brilliant get-together for the renewed forum. Count me in!

Cheers,

This is one of those rare occasions when I have put forward a suggestion and it has not been shot down in flames as "one of those ideas that only I could come up". Well, as there is general agreement on the subject, let me give where everyone is and what sort of things are possible and I shall make a formal suggestion later on today

I just read (again!) Les méridiens et le calendrier, article written by Jules Verne and published in the Journal d'Amiens (April, 14-15, 1873).
In a week, we celebrate Verne's birthday.
It would be nice if the members of the resurrected Jules Verne Forum could come virtually together on that day. The fact that the Forum is worldwide means that we are spread over 24 time zones.

I offer a 24 hour zoom meeting covering the 24 hours of February 8, beginning at 0h 0 min at the date line and ending again at the date line 24 hours later. The International Date Line, established in 1884, passes through the mid-Pacific Ocean and roughly follows a 180 degrees longitude north-south line on the Earth. It is located halfway round the world from the prime meridian—the zero degrees longitude established in Greenwich, England, in 1852. When it's noon in Greenwich, it will be midnight at the date line. See a time zone world map at https://www.timeanddate.com/time/map/

Now it's up to you to let everybody know when you want to join (best use UTC time) and for how long. Doing it this way, everybody can join to meet other people at the same time they are online.

I hope to see a lot of traffic on the Forum in the coming week, about appointment times!

And here is the invitation to the meeting (meeting-id and passcode are mandatory, but no waiting room):

I was working on the same principle (a book to be read across all time zones) but was trying to find one that would stretch across of them (which when you include the odd ones comes to something like 29 or 30). In that case, as they say in all the best American political adverts "I approve this message!"

I appreciate the iniciative. Since I never participated in any public reading before, I am sorry to ask perhaps a very basic questions:
Shall we read:
• one book agreed to or of our own choice?
• in our respective languages or in French?

There are so many approaches to choose from.

We could all read the same book/chapter/story beforehand and discuss our views and impressions. This is something we do at meetings of the Dutch JV Society. Perhaps a little late now to pick a text and read it, with only a few days left.

Another option would be to choose one passage that particularly appeals to you, read it to the other participants, and tell them why you chose this particular bit. I think this would make for a nice personal touch.

I wouldn't want to impose any particular language, as not everyone is able to read or speak French. I suspect the discussions will be mainly in English, French, perhaps German or Spanish, but nothing prevents you from reading Verne in Serbian, Swedish or Swahili. In fact, I would quite enjoy hearing that.

Cheers,
Garmt

Good night all.

A wonderful date is approaching, in which all the Vernians will be able to meet and share a passion: The day to read Verne! Many thanks to Jean-Michel for providing ya the link.

If you have no problem, this next Saturday I will send a newsletter to all our members with the information and the link.

We (Hispanic Jules Verne Society) are also discussing opening a "sub-room" for Spanish speakers, in which we'll read a book together. It will probably be Clovis Dardentor, to "warm up" for our future Third International Congress that we will celebrate in Palma de Mallorca (Spain) in November 2021.

So, I will see you next 8th at the JM link. On the other hand, every year we publish on our website all the activities carried out this day around the planet... I suppose you will have no problem if I capture a snapshot of our meeting and we post it on the web as another wonderful activity carried out ;-)

A hug, vernianamente,

Nicolás

Looking forward to tomorrow!

During the day (CET) I'll try to join the Zoom meeting in between my other obligations. During the evening, I will certainly be online, just keeping the meeting open and seeing who else pops in.

Here in the Netherlands, we have snow today, and it's freezing. It's a layer that those of you who live in a D climate wouldn't look at twice, and at –5 °C I still refuse to wear a coat, but it's been a while since it was this wintery, so I think I'll treat myself to some Hatteras this week :)

Cheers,
Garmt

I just tested the Zoom meeting that Jean-Michel set up. Everything works fine, and we're ready to go.

A few tips & tricks for when you join:

- Jean-Michel created three so-called Breakout Rooms (English, French, Spanish). These are sub-meetings of the main meeting, which you can access via the toolbar at the bottom of your Zoom window:
Screenshot 2021-02-07 at 20.31.34.png

- When you join a Breakout Room, you leave the main meeting. This also means that if you arrive to find the main meeting room empty, it doesn't mean no-one is in the call. You'll just have to check the Breakout Rooms to see who else is there.

- When you join the meeting, your audio and video may be automatically disabled. If people don't respond to your "Hi, how are you", you aren't being ghosted, just make sure your mic is on. This can also be done via the toolbar at the bottom of the Zoom window.

I hope there will be a nice big turnout tomorrow!

Cheers,
Garmt
