THE ROLE

As Director of Communications, you will own and drive media coverage for Families for Excellent Schools across the states where we work Reporting to the Managing Director of Communications and working closely with other members of the Communications team, you will develop earned and owned media content (op-eds, press releases, emails, parent stories), and will be end-game responsible for all of the organization’s written content. You will work as an integral member across multiple teams and dive headfirst into a fast-paced environment. RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities of the Director of Communications will include but are not limited to:

Develop strategies for advancing issues and campaigns that are consistent with Families for Excellent Schools’ stance;
Edit and/or write all written content for public presentation on FES’s campaigns, including but not limited to thoughtful and compelling Op-Eds, press releases, issue briefs, and speeches;
Manage a team of talented content producers;
Manage a rapid-response media operation to pitch content to news outlets;
Work closely with digital team to integrate content across all media channels;
Manage logistical support of media events (press conference, rallies, events);
Oversee Families for Excellent Schools’ press list development and clip files; Manage press kit preparation and communications infrastructure;

REQUIREMENTS

Candidates should enjoy working in a dynamic, results-oriented environment in which expectations are high for both the quality and speed of work. In addition, they should have the following:

5+ years of communications or relevant experience;
Strong general communication skills;
Extremely strong writing/editing skills - background in editing/writing strong preferred;
Successful experience working in fast-paced, campaign environments, with the capacity to be nimble flexible, collaborative, and solutions-oriented;
Strong project management skills; detail orientation, with an ability to operate in a highly organized fashion;
Ability to effectively build relationships with various internal and external partners;
Political experience preferred but not required;
Preferred commitment to education, low-income communities, and communities of color.
