Digital Communications Specialist

This position will be responsible for supporting all aspects of AFSCME’s Digital Unit. Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Digital and Video and in support of the Web Editor and Senior Digital Strategy Coordinator, this position will assist in the creation, production and maintenance of online content used to support legislative, political, organizing, and fundraising communications.

DUTIES:

  • Monitors, updates and creates original share graphics for organizational profiles on social media platforms. 
  • Supports the development of digital materials for issue, political, organizing and other campaigns. 
  • Edits compelling, short, timely, sharable online video using existing news and/or stock footage, graphics and text. 
  • Produces well-written, concise email messaging that supports larger organizational initiatives. 
  • Works with Digital team to provide support and training to affiliates, specifically as related to online and texting programs. 
  • Support the development, troubleshooting, testing and launch of new web and online platforms. 
  • Compile web, email and social networking analytics into reports. 
  • Optimize blog items to be posted to achieve best performance. 
  • Performs other related duties to support department objectives. 

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with course work in communications, journalism, political science or liberal arts. 
  • 3-5 years of relevant work experience in online communications or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills Requirements:

  • A demonstrated ability to use online tools to communicate with and motivate target groups to take action, including email, social media and online video.
  • Experience creating content for online consumption.
  • Experience using a Customer Relationship Management System. 
  • Robust email writing skills, the ability to condense information and convey it clearly and concisely.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, specifically Premiere Pro and Photoshop. 
  • Experience using Excel to compile analytics.
  • Ability to work independently and to collaborate and work well with staff at all levels and in a team environment. 
  • Ability to handle heavy workload, juggle competing priorities, work long hours to meet deadlines.
  • Flexibility, positive attitude, superior attention to detailand critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work across-platforms (Mac and Windows OS).
  • Ability to travel and work extended hours as needed. 

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with SMS texting software.
  • Experience with content management software.
  • Experience using a Customer Relationship Management System. 
  • HTML coding skills with knowledge of CSS, JavaScript, and database management. 
  • Basic motion graphics editing. 
  • Experience with digital advertising
