The North Dakota Democratic-NPL Party seeks an experienced, dynamic communications professional to serve as Communications Director. We are looking for applicants with excellent writing and editing skills, attention to detail, experience developing and executing media strategies, and a proven ability to build strong relationships with reporters and press outlets throughout North Dakota.

POSITION TITLE: Communications Director

 

LOCATION: Bismarck, ND

 

DESCRIPTION: The Communications Director will draft and edit news releases, pitch stories to the media, manage the Dem-NPL’s research program, and work with candidates and local party organizations to strengthen their communications output. The Communications Director reports to the Dem-NPL Executive Director and works closely with other staff, candidates, and consultants. This is not an entry-level position

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and execute the Dem-NPL’s communication plan in consultation with the Executive Director;
  • Work with party staff, candidates, and campaigns to develop messaging frameworks and set deliverable communications goals;
  • Disseminate effectively the goals, activities, and accomplishments of the Dem-NPL with news media and key constituency groups through traditional and social media together with the Digital Director, as well as digital marketing;
  • Manage all media requests, and prepare and disseminate communications tools such as press releases, op-eds, public statements from various Dem-NPL officials, speeches, talking points, presentations, media advisories, briefings, and pitch ideas;
  • Cultivate relationships with media professionals throughout North Dakota;
  • Manage Dem-NPL opposition research efforts;
  • Facilitate national message output through collaboration with various national party committees, and national media contacts or experience working with the major national news outlets preferred;
  • Create and provide media trainings for candidates and local party organizations;
  • Work with party staff to manage communication situations when they arise, including crisis management, and on priority projects and events as needed;
  • Flexibility to work long and irregular hours, including weekends and evenings, with some travel, as needed.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least three years of experience in campaign communications, media relations, journalism, marketing, or related field;
  • Attention to detail a must;
  • Strong writing, verbal communication, and proofreading skills, with copy editing experience a plus;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff and manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting tight, established deadlines;
  • Proficiency with Mac and PC operating systems necessary to update and maintain press lists and databases of surrogates, committees, and volunteers;
  • Capacity to think quickly on your feet, work in a fast-paced team environment, and identify opportunities and potential risk;
  • Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment while also working independently;
  • Basic HTML a plus;
  • Ability to craft messaging and frame issues for various audiences.
