Head of Campaigns
THE ORGANIZATION
The Sister District Project is a grassroots political startup. We organize our 44,000 volunteers across the country to build progressive power and capacity in order to win strategic state elections for Democrats. We “sister” our 75 volunteer teams with candidates who receive field and fundraising support. We provide two services to campaigns - 1) grassroots field capacity from our volunteers and teams, and 2) campaign advice and strategy. Since our founding in 2016, we’ve worked with approximately 50 candidates, for whom we’ve raised more than $1.1 million in small grassroots dollars and touched more than 1 million voters through phones, doors, postcards, and texts.
ROLE SUMMARY
The Sister District Project (SDP) is seeking to hire a mission-driven, inquisitive campaign operative to work with our Political Director to push our campaign support services forward. Key activities include: 1) managing existing volunteer field programs; 2) building and implementing new volunteer field programs; 3) developing and implementing campaign support services; and 4) managing internal field staff. Previous senior-level campaign experience with 3+ years/cycles required. This is an internal and campaign-facing position, not a volunteer-interfacing position, and reports directly to our Political Director.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Volunteer Field Programs
Manage Existing Volunteer-Powered Field Programs
- Under the supervision of the Political Director, and in coordination with selected state legislative campaigns, manage and improve existing volunteer field programs (including phonebanking and postcarding).
- Work with Political Director to set programmatic metrics.
- Monitor and evaluate programs over time.
- Under the supervision of the Political Director, and in coordination with selected state legislative campaigns, develop and implement new volunteer field programs. These include textbanking and expanded canvassing opportunities.
- Conduct outreach to vendors and services to evaluate field tech, and make recommendations to Political Director about purchasing decisions.
- Work with Political Director to set programmatic metrics.
- Monitor and evaluate programs over time.
Campaign Support Services
- Under the supervision of the Political Director, develop and implement campaign support services. This may include training, strategy, and ongoing coaching for endorsed candidates.
- With Political Director, serve as a resource to candidates and their staff on the following: Building a professional campaign team; Developing budgets and campaign plans (including field); Establishing high-quality campaign structures for field, communications, digital, and fundraising.
- Establish processes and materials for campaign support services.
- Develop systems so that SDP field staff can implement campaign support services.
General Activities
- Manage SDP Field Directors. Under supervision of the Political Director, and Director of Engagement (Organizing Department), manage small staff of field directors in execution of volunteer programs and campaign support. This includes working with staff to establish ongoing field metrics and empower field staff to work with campaigns successfully.
- Perform additional duties as needed.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
The Head of Programs is a new position designed to build our volunteer programs and campaign support services. This individual must be able to work well under pressure, work independently, and have a demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate effectively. We’re looking for someone with great organizational skills, excellent project management skills, and experience designing and implementing field and candidate support in the electoral context.
Must Haves:
- Previous experience with 3+ years/cycles working with electoral campaigns required
- Working knowledge of basic campaign tools and technology including VAN
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication and customer service skills
- Proficiency in remote management of teams/projects
- Entrepreneurial self-starter, able to work independently, in a remote setting
- Excellent organizational skills
- Demonstrated success with complex project management
- Commitment to voting rights, progressive social values and public policies
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience implementing campaign technology including texting platforms (e.g. Hustle, Relay)
- Existing relationships with progressive political organizations and technology vendors
START DATE & LOCATION
We are looking to fill this position immediately. Sister District is a fully distributed organization, and the position may be filled from anywhere in the United States.
PAY
Commensurate with experience and location. This is an independent contractor position with no benefits. The position is a full time, 9-month position, which runs through December 2019 with the possibility of extension or employment thereafter.
