Communications Director

Full Time, Exempt

 

Position Description

The Economic Security Project is seeking a Communications Director to design and coordinate our communications and audience engagement strategy. This individual will identify and seek out opportunities to shape the narrative on unconditional cash transfers and basic income, provide leadership on rapid response and medium term message strategy, and execute daily responsibilities. The Communications Director will contribute to narrative development, assess and respond to incoming media requests, and implement an aggressive media outreach strategy for core initiatives and projects.

 

The Communications Director reports to the Managing Director and works closely with the entire Economic Security Project team, including the Co-Founders, Special Initiatives Director, and Campaigns Director. The ideal candidate has a strong track record shifting media narratives, communicating across sectors, and responding to a fast-changing political environment. They thrive in a fast-paced workplace environment that prizes creative thinking, low ego, effectiveness, and an all-hands-on-deck approach.

The Economic Security Project is a network committed to advancing the debate on a guaranteed income in the United States and is co-chaired by future of work instigator Natalie Foster, Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes, and Roosevelt Institute Fellow Dorian Warren. The Managing Director is Taylor Jo Isenberg.

 

Responsibilities

 

Develop and drive strategies to influence and inform the public narrative, which includes (40%):

·       Cultivating and leveraging media relationships in conjunction with emerging priorities;

·       Pitching, prepping, and supporting ESP’s co-chairs and network members for media requests;

·       Responding to and strategizing around incoming media requests;

·       Managing placement of op-eds, letters to the editor and talking points on a variety of issues related to the Economic Security Project’s mission nationally and in states;

 

Contribute to and strategize around an emerging economic idea in the context of the 2018 and 2020 election cycles, which includes (40%):

·       Identifying and supporting new voices to support, train, and amplify;

·       Contributing to the development of private and public events;

·       Analyzing evolving narrative on key issues in target geographies; and

·       Collaborating with Managing Director and Special Initiatives Director to align audience engagement with communications strategy;

 

Produce high-quality content and materials, which includes (20%):

·       Supporting development of digital content and message;

·       Developing and copy-editing organizational collateral and public pieces;

·       Drafting and editing quotes, press releases, and network-generated posts.

 

Qualifications

 

·       Bachelor’s degree preferred with 5+ years of experience

·       Background in politics, campaigns, and/or advocacy nonprofits

·       Demonstrated track record advancing a strong media narrative on high-profile issues, establishing relationships with local and national reporters, staging and running live press events, working with principals and surrogates, and pushing back against negative narratives

·       Strong writing and copyediting skills

·       Ability to work on deadline, adapt to changing situations, handle confidential information, and switch between different projects and tasks on short notice

 

We will consider applicants from all parts of the country, but have a preference for individuals in New York City or San Francisco. This position is full time and considered exempt from FLSA overtime rules.
