The Alliance for Safety and Justice Action Fund (ASJAF), a 501(c)4 project of the The Advocacy Fund, advances policy change in states across the county to replace over-incarceration with new safety priorities rooted in prevention and community health. ASJAF activities include lobbying and supporting ballot initiatives. ASJAF is the sister organization of Alliance for Safety and Justice (ASJ) and Californians for Safety and Justice (CSJ), both projects of Tides Center. ASJAF and it’s sister organizations aim to take advantage of the new national attention to the problems of over-incarceration to achieve significant reductions in state-based incarceration and to advance the capacity of state-based reform advocates to transform state-based safety and justice policy priorities. ASJAF works with state leaders and advocacy organizations in states across the country to engage in lobbying and run, support and win ballot campaigns through elevating new voices, and engaging in strategic communications, alliance-building, issue education and civic engagement. ASJAF is committed to winning campaigns that both reform state justice systems and empower the communities most harmed by crime and incarceration.
Position Summary:
ASJAF is gearing up to advance ballot initiative campaigns in two states in 2018 (Florida and Ohio). This position will act as the lead project manager to ensure the role ASJAF is playing in each campaign is executed with maximum effectiveness. Each of these ballot initiative efforts include in-state partners and infrastructure including things such as ballot committees, coalitions, attorneys, communications firms and more. The campaigns manager will act as a lead liaison between ASJAF and these campaigns. The Campaigns Manager must be determined to win, dedicated to solving problems, pay close attention to detail and have the ability to build transformative and supportive relationships with partners. The Campaigns Manager will take the lead in ASJAF project management, information sharing and task management in alignment with ASJAF’s goals of winning these ballot campaigns in collaboration with our partners.
This position will be evaluated based on the ability to: ensure execution of all ASJAF responsibilities in the ballot campaigns in Florida and Ohio (ASJAF plays different roles in each and has different responsibilities in each). Reporting to the ASJ Vice President and working closely with the ASJ Vice President and President, the Campaigns Manager is responsible for carrying out a wide range of tasks dedicated to winning ballot campaigns in both Florida and Ohio. There is a diversity of skills and responsibilities needed for this position including activities such as: administrative, research, information sharing, systems management, maintaining relationships with diverse stakeholders and keen negotiation skills. This position will also ensure that emerging needs are addressed and relevant contractors and staff are apprised of issues and needs as they arise.
Position Responsibilities include:
● Act as the lead project manager for ASJAF’s roles and responsibilities in the Ohio and Florida ballot campaigns.
● In coordination with President and Vice President, develop and manage an internal information-sharing infrastructure for ballot campaign strategies, activities and tasks that ensures all ASJAF responsibilities are tracked and that ASJAF achieves its’ benchmarks and timeline goals.
● Create and generate reports, issue briefs, conduct rapid response research, put together bios and prep information for meetings with stakeholders, pulling news clips on specific topics.
● Serve as a general task master tracking campaign activities, including but not limited to developing agendas and taking notes for all meetings, tracking all tasks coming out of all meetings, ensuring relevant staff and consultants are apprised of ballot campaign issues.
● Create, oversee and regularly update master calendar in both states.
● Serve as primary liaison, communicator and task-master on behalf of ASJAF in campaigns in both states.
● Willingness to travel extensively to both states.
● Maintain daily communication with partners in states and address partner needs.
● Participate in regular meetings of various management bodies that support the growth and organizational development of ASJAF;
● Facilitate coordination between the Campaigns team and the other ASJ and ASJAF capacity teams including Research, Communications, Digital, and Organizing and Capacity Building to help meet campaign goals in both states.
Qualifications
We are looking for applicants with the following qualifications:
● Experience managing ballot initiative campaigns.
● A commitment to criminal justice reform.
● At least five years of organizing and issue campaign experience.
● Experience with base building community organizations, as well as with labor and other campaigning organizations.
● Experience working with donors, law enforcement, business leader and conservatives.
● A demonstrated commitment to racial equity, gender justice, and to empowering low- and moderate-income communities, communities of color, and immigrant communities.
● Experience with a wide range of campaign approaches, with a demonstrated experience with corporate campaigns, legislative campaigns, and electoral politics.
● First rate management skills, with a proven ability to implement a holistic management system in movement organization context, significant experience supervising large, diverse, advanced teams of organizers, etc.

Physical Demands
The position requires the operation of a telephone and computer for up to 8 hours per day. Must be able to occasionally travel throughout the United States.
Work Environment
Based in Florida or Ohio office with regular travel throughout United States
