Description:
Under
the supervision of the assistant to the president for communications, s/he
supervises media campaigns staff and directs the paid and earned media
campaigns across platforms. Responsible for crafting and implementing messaging
and mobilization campaigns across media at the national level, and supporting
the work of our local and state affiliates in traditional and digital media
efforts.
Key responsibilities- Manages media staff to ensure
high-quality, consistent and creative campaigns across media types to
advance the mission and vision of the AFT.
- Helps to develop and
oversee strategy for media components of campaigns that the AFT is running
nationally and locally.
- Builds and optimizes
AFT’s relationships with journalists and producers.
- Works with the
Office of the President to best coordinate and amplify speaking
engagements and media requests and to leverage digital media to best
amplify and support activities of AFT’s executive officers.
- Works with assistant
to the president and additional stakeholders to craft and deliver messaging
for AFT and its officers.
- Oversees work and
contracts for paid and earned media vendors.
- Creates and
implements best practices for media engagement throughout AFT’s campaigns,
departments and divisions.
- Works with director of
communications operations to oversee paid advertising for the AFT on
national and local campaigns.

Works with the
political and other departments to integrate best media practices into the
union’s work.
Experience, knowledge and qualifications
- A minimum of 4
years’ experience running media, messaging and/or digital campaigns.
- At least two years’
experience managing staff in communications and/or political campaign
settings.
- Fast and effective
writer with a strong eye for political messaging.
- Ability to supervise
work allocation and implement procedures and systems to maximize operating
efficiency.
- Ability to
persuasively articulate the importance of integrating media strategy in an
organizing, political or issue advocacy campaign.
- Knowledge and
interest in integrating digital media with traditional media.
- Work effectively
with elected leaders and staff in complex and sometimes politically
sensitive situations.

Ability to oversee
and manage multiple priority projects and meet deadlines.
- Prior work experience in a union environment is preferred
- Familiarity with AFT and its affiliates is preferred

Salary and benefits
Salary is $158,075 annually with generous benefits including health, vacation and retirement
