Title: Intern

Reports to: Intern Coordinator

Location: Washington, DC

 

Giffords is looking for interns to join our team in Washington, DC during the spring semester of 2020. As an intern at Giffords, you will work directly with our Communications, Development, Engagement, Government Affairs, or Political team on a wide range of projects. 

The ideal intern is highly organized, detail-oriented, a strong writer, and passionate about the issue of gun violence prevention.

DUTIES + RESPONSIBILITIES:

·      Communications

o   Monitor and assemble daily press clips on related issues

o   Draft content for messaging such as press release and blog posts

o   Monitor break stories

o   Create and reorganize press lists

o   Research reporters and assigned topics

o   Film production and editing experience a plus

·      Development

o   Conduct donor & prospective donor research

o   Assist with database entry, management, and finance tracking

o   Draft donor correspondences and assist with mailings

o   Help with special projects and events as needed

·      Engagement

o   Manage individual and coalitional advocate correspondence

o   Recruit young advocates to be involved in the Giffords Courage Fellowship

o   Help plan and execute events related to the Giffords Courage Fellowship

o   Conduct research and provide statistics related to various advocacy coalitions

·      Government Affairs

o   Research gun-related issues, policies, and legislation

o   Research potential stakeholders and influencers

o   Produce materials related to said research projects

o   Collect and identify relevant policy research from various outlets and allies

o   Monitor and summarize legislative hearings and markups

o   Assist with meeting and event preparations

·      Political

o   Conduct media monitoring for key races, states, and regions

o   Research personal, electoral, legislative, and political histories of candidates and incumbents

o   Collect and identify relevant political and electoral research from various outlets and partners

o   Track communications with federal, state, and local campaigns

o   Write first drafts of memos and briefs

o   Assist with drafting official PAC endorsement letters to candidates

o   Assist with compliance work related to PAC checks and independent expenditures

 

The position is paid and based in Washington, DC. Duration of the internship is negotiable with a commitment of approximately 12-16  hours per week during  the spring 2020  Giffords will work with interns to gain academic credit if applicable.
