Summary: Make the Road Connecticut seeks a motivated and experienced Director to continue building the organization.

 

Organizational Description:
Make the Road CT (MRCT) launched in December 2014, when Bridgeport residents began meeting regularly, learning about the Make the Road New York model, and defining their own goals for building the membership of their new organization and addressing the needs of low wage workers, youth, and immigrants in their community. Three years later, MRCT has become a hub of organizing in Bridgeport with 7 staff members and multiple active campaigns that focus on the well-being of our members. MRCT has fought and won the implementation of language access protections for the city, passed a Sanctuary City resolution and is currently working with youth and day laborers on transportation and work-related safety issues while maintaining a strong presence on local, statewide and national immigration efforts.

 

Make the Road Connecticut is a member of the Make the Road family, and a sister organization to Make the Roads in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Nevada. All Make the Roads use a similar organizing model, work in similar neighborhoods, and are coordinate closely on organizational development and campaigns. MRCT is fiscally sponsored by the Center for Popular Democracy, and works closely with CPD on a range of areas.

 

Job Description:
The Director is the primary point of contact for MRCT, and supports the growth and success of the organization in the following ways:  

• Managing a team of 3-7 employees, and coordinating all hiring processes;
• Working with organizers to develop leaders from our neighborhoods to carry significant portions of the work and planning for the organization;
• Developing and supporting MRCT’s campaigns.
• Identifying opportunities for Make the Road to be a value add to the progressive organizing landscape in Connecticut to win bigger collective victories and build collective power;
• Represent Make the Road in campaign spaces and with allies in the state and around the country;
• Navigate local and organizational politics to develop relationships, partnerships and coalitions;
• Manage the organization’s communications strategy in earned and social media that elevates members voices and stories around the issues we work on;
• Support the development of political education and consciousness of members through working with organizers, workshops, and individual meetings;
• Develop the organization’s internal infrastructure to ensure MRCT functions efficiently and effectively;
• Identifying and pursuing funding opportunities and ensuring Make the Road CT meets requirements and deadlines;

 

The person will receive substantial support and coaching from a deep and experienced team of organizers and directors from across the Make the Road family and the CPD network.

 

Requirements:
This person must have the tenacity and vision to continue to build an organization that has taken off in recent months. We believe the following are requirements the person needs to be successful:

• At least seven years of experience doing community or labor organizing or similar work;
• Experience with policy campaigns around immigration and workers’ rights is especially preferred, but also in the areas of housing, education, youth organizing, or LGBTQ organizing;
• Belief that community organizing is a powerful and effective tool to make change;
• The ability to move people to action;
• A strong desire to listen and develop others’ leadership;
• An understanding of the political and organizational landscape of Connecticut and Bridgeport is preferred;
• The ability to communicate both written and verbally in Spanish and English;
• The ability to work on your own in flexible and potentially fast paced circumstances.
