Chief of Staff, State Senator Brian Kavanagh

 

Summary:

 

The Chief of Staff is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the office of the 26th Senate District. In addition to being the primary advisor to the Senator, the Chief of Staff is responsible for developing and supervising policy and legislative strategy, communications, constituent services, scheduling, district issues, and personnel matters, among others.

 

Essential Job Functions:

 

·      Develops relationships with constituents, central staff, staff colleagues in elected and government offices, city and state agencies, advocacy organizations, community groups and other stakeholders to advance legislative, budgetary, and community priorities.

·      Works with leadership team to develop strategies and tactics to advance legislation and community issues. Topics of particular legislative interest include housing, gun violence prevention, election law, governmental and political reform, environmental protection, consumer protection, and economic and social justice.

·      Oversees communications staff to ensure consistent and appropriate messaging.

·      Oversees all personnel and related matters, including recruiting, hiring, training, and managing employees in district and legislative offices; assigning and directing work; supervising work product; evaluating staff performance.

 

Qualifications:

 

College degree and significant experience with public policy in or out of government are required. Demonstrated, significant personnel and project management experience also required. Experience working with legislation, familiarity with New York government and politics, and/or advanced degree strongly preferred. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to public service, excellent oral and written communication and analytical skills, good judgement, political sensitivity, and a willingness to work long hours as necessary and some weekends in a fast-paced, collaborative work environment. Travel to Albany may be required during the January-June legislative session. The New York State Senate is an equal opportunity employer.
