THE ROLE


As Manager of Communications, you will own and drive media coverage for Families for Excellent Schools in New York and Connecticut. Reporting to the Managing Director of Communications and working closely with other members of the Communications team, you will be an integral member of a fast-paced communications team by developing earned and owned media content (op-eds, press releases, blog posts, other digital content). RESPONSIBILITIES


Responsibilities of the Manager of Communications will include but are not limited to:

  • Develop strategies for advancing issues and campaigns that are consistent with Families for Excellent Schools’ stance;
  • Manage regular trainings for core parent spokespeople
  • Write thoughtful and compelling Op-Eds and press releases; Provide and edit web content as needed;
  • Manage logistical support of media events (press conference, rallies, events);
  • Oversee graphic design of collateral materials;
  • Manage Families for Excellent Schools’ press list development and clip files; Manage press kit preparation and communications infrastructure;
  • Prepare talking points and briefing materials

QUALITIES AND CHARACTERISTICS


Candidates should enjoy working in a dynamic, results-oriented environment in which expectations are high for both the quality and speed of work. In addition, they should have the following:

  • 2-4 years of communications or relevant experience;
  • Strong communication skills;
  • Successful experience working in entrepreneurial environments, with the capacity to be flexible, collaborative, and solutions-oriented; 
  • Strong project management skills; detail orientation, with an ability to operate in a highly organized fashion;
  • Ability to effectively build relationships with various internal and external partners;
  • Political experience preferred but not required;
  • Preferred commitment to education, low-income communities, and communities of color.

This position requires work outside of normal business hours
