The Public Interest Network seeks a Chief of Staff for our Program areas, who will plan, direct and coordinate campaign and program operations in support of our continued growth. The Chief of Staff will formulate campaign decisions and create policies that will shape the trajectory of our organization, while managing daily operations of personnel, making internal strategic decisions, and working with our leadership team to maintain a strong, healthy future for The Public Interest Network.

As Programs Chief of Staff, you would devise and strategize campaigns to fight drought in California, stand up for consumers against predatory lending practices, protect and implement the EPA’s new Clean Water Rule around the country, and stop the overuse of antibiotics on factory farms. The Chief of Staff develops these campaigns in concert with the Network’s public brands, including Environment America, U.S. PIRG, and Fair Share, and formulates how to utilize our sizable, sophisticated field presence in 25 states.

For more than 40 years, organizations in The Public Interest Network have been taking on powerful interests on behalf of the American public. Our team has directly generated over half a million public comments this year and thousands of media hits on our issues.  We were part of a team that delivered 8 million comments to the EPA this year on clean water, which yielded a new clean water rule, and we successfully pressured McDonalds to remove antibiotics from its chicken products. We also worked on a variety of state-level issues: increasing use of solar energy in Texas, passing a resolution to end childhood hunger in Maryland, and securing $250 million in more public transportation funding in Colorado. The Director will develop our national programs, develop strong relationships with coalition partners, and identify opportunities for fundraising and growing our campaigns.

Responsibilities:

Craft and Implement Internal Policies: Work with our leadership team to formulate policies and plans that will foster the continued growth of our organization.

Strategic Campaign Decision-Making: Work with The Public Interest Network’s Political Department and campaign staff to craft winning strategies.  Assess opportunities for building political support for our agenda through coalition-building, grassroots organizing, media coverage, and message development.

Visionary Leadership: Find new opportunities for our groups to make a difference at the right time and in the right places, and assist our staff in taking advantage of these opportunities.

Develop Strong Relationships: Build alliances and relationships with

coalition partners, academics, and elected officials to foster community adoption and prioritization of Public Interest Network programs and campaigns. Work with The Public Interest Network’s 20+ state offices and federal lobbying offices to find legislative sponsors and draw up bills to enact our programs.

Fundraising: Write grant proposals, build relationships with foundation staff, and meet with major donors. Work with our citizen outreach staff to build and develop our membership base.

Staff recruitment and development: Structure effective training programs and measure their success. Recruit new staff and volunteers. Oversee program staff to develop and implement work plans; provide training and leadership development opportunities.

Candidates must have a minimum of 15 years of professional experience in campaign or program development, grassroots organizing, organization building, and/or campaign politics.
