Work with OpenMedia
Digital Rights Campaigner, Privacy and Free Expression Pillars
OpenMedia is an effective, dynamic team leading the charge to protect the possibilities of the open Internet. We believe in the power of the Internet to make the world better. To do that, Internet access must be affordable and fast, personal privacy must be respected online, and free expression must be the default mode of the web.
We are a lean digital rights group that punches above our weight. Our community is changing the way the Internet comes together to defend our digital freedoms— the freedoms that make the Internet the greatest tool for sharing knowledge and culture since humans first put charcoal to papyrus.
And, we happen to be looking for another practical idealist who doesn’t want just any ordinary job.
Job Description
OpenMedia’s Digital Rights Campaigners have a big impact on the movement to protect the free and open Internet. Your position will focus on our North American Privacy and Free Expression portfolios, which focus on government surveillance and copyright issues respectively. The Privacy and Free Expression Campaigner regularly engages the public on issues like the Trans Pacific Partnership, online spying, IMSI-catchers (or “Stingrays”), and copyright term extensions. In this role, you will build campaigns, speak to the media, and inspire hundreds of thousands of people to fight for the free and open web.
Here’s who we hope you are:
- You know how to grow a community. You eat, sleep, and breathe campaigning. This is what Openmedia is all about, and our number one priority for this position.
- You want to empower people. At OpenMedia, we are passionate about showing what people can do when they stand together. This is your number one priority.
- You care about the open web. You get fired up about all the weird stuff that makes the Internet so great, and you want to make sure it stays open, affordable, and surveillance-free.
- You are in between two worlds. You have one foot in advocacy, and the other in policy. You are a hybrid – a “pink unicorn”– and you’re passionate about translating “policy wonk” language into easy-to-understand, compelling, and hard-hitting materials that move people to action.
- You are dynamic. This is a fast-paced environment. Really fast-paced. You can jump between tasks, issues, and communication streams with the elegance of a jazz musician.
- You know how to prioritize strategically. You have a fine-tuned sense of when it’s worth it to “drop everything,” and are OK with the fact that, some days, an early morning development means you won’t get through a single item you put on your to-do list that day.
- You are courageous. You’re working with one of the largest digital rights communities in the world, and going up against some of the most powerful government and private bureaucracies on the planet. This takes guts.
- You can laugh at yourself. Sometimes we make mistakes. And when this happens, we all agree to “fail forward” and support each other. This means you’re collaborative, low-ego, and can bring people together to build a “win-win strategy” for good internal and external alliances.
- You are “so over” partisan bickering. We don’t just want a seat at the table when government makes decisions; we actively work to put citizens at the centre of government decision-making.
As OpenMedia’s Privacy and Free Expression Campaigner, you should have experience:
- Building campaign plans and timelines that a diverse team of stakeholders can understand.
- Coordinating a team of engagement experts, developers, and graphic designers and engineers to build campaign platforms, tools, graphics, landing pages, etc.
- Leading email advocacy campaign strategies including strong calls-to-action and A/B testing.
- Facilitating effective cross-functional team meetings in the heat of campaigns.
- Initiating rapid response campaign planning, design, and execution.
- Relying on data to drive decisions and pivot points. This means you lean hard on metrics to gauge progress toward specific outcomes.
- Developing a deep understanding of the core best practices of digital campaigning including research, planning, organizing, and communications.
- Coordinating many different communications channels, such as social media, press outreach, email, eBlast outreach, advertising, and others.
- Leveraging current events to focus the public’s attention on pervasive, complex issues.
You should also have the following qualifications:
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Excellent writing and editing skills.
- Excellent project management skills.
- 2+ years experience working in communications, journalism, digital campaigns, Internet policy, or another related field.
- Good knowledge of privacy and copyright policy issues in North America.
- Online content production experience, including expertise in virality & increasing website traffic.
- Experience with social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, reddit, and Google+
- Are able to work independently with minimal supervision, to manage a team – whatever it takes.
- Savvy with web content management systems – particularly Drupal 7 – and basic knowledge of HTML.
And, for bonus points, you would also be comfortable:
- Collaborating with a huge network of policy experts on strategic messaging and writing.
- Managing campaigns in partnership with a diverse, distributed team of colleagues and peers;
- Teaching your colleagues what you know to help reach our goals faster;
- Working at a distance, or remotely with team members around the world;
- Giving and receiving feedback to continually improve and have a greater impact;
- Brainstorming with some of the smartest and coolest people we know; and
- Reading, writing, and speaking an additional language.
