Social Media and Online Mobilization Coordinator

This position is responsible for broadening and implementing the national union’s social media presence to strengthen relationships with members, educate them on issues and services provided by the union, and engage them on priority campaigns. This position will also develop strategies to leverage existing offline member communications.
 
Duties:
  • Creates and implements national social media strategies that increase audience engagement, reach, and support the union’s overall communications objectives.
  • Plan and carry out news conferences and media events, and write news releases, editorials, advertisements, brochures, and blogs.
  • Creates and supports digital strategies for political, internal communication, organizing, and legislative campaigns.
  • Works with various internal departments to engage members around issue, legislative, political, organizing and fundraising campaigns, including, but not limited to, social media, SMS, online advertising and email.
  • Works with various internal departments to engage members around issue, legislative, political, organizing and fundraising campaigns, including, but not limited to, social media, SMS, online advertising and email.  Leads the development of strategies and plans to convert online subscribers and activists into offline activists and contributors, and vice versa.
  • Creates and coordinates list-building strategies involving paid and unpaid acquisitions. Identifies opportunities to augment offline member communications with digital strategies and works to demonstrate to other departments and affiliates the value of incorporating digital tools into their communications.
  • Tracks, analyzes and reports on all platforms and campaigns to maximize online communication effectiveness and build internal awareness about the benefits of online tools and tactics to supplement offline programs. Schedules and manages national social media program involving various channels.
  • Provides support and training to affiliate digital initiatives, specifically as related to digital media, texting and online programs. Works closely with affiliate executive directors and communications directors, political representatives, and organizing directors to set up training programs.
  • Represents AFSCME in the AFL-CIO Working Families Network.  Selects and manages vendors for various projects.
  • Researches new technologies and techniques for communicating with AFSCME’s membership more effectively.
  •  Perform other duties as required to support the department and its mission.
 Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with coursework in labor relations, communications, political science, liberal arts or related course of study and  seven to ten years of experience in labor, political or community organizing and campaign communications with at least four years of social media experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills Requirements:
  • Experience and existing relationships with national press.
  • Strong and proven persuasive writing skills demonstrated by samples of online campaign writing.
  • A high level of computer proficiency, including image editing and using spreadsheets to analyze and manipulate data.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Ability to analyze and incorporate message research data.
  • Proven ability to juggle several projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Commitment to editorial excellence and attention to detail.
  • Experience with digital advertising, especially on Facebook, but including Google AdWords.
