The mission of the new Mobilization Department at the
Democratic National Committee is to bring ordinary people into the heart of the
DNC and provide Americans with encouragement, power, and tools to mobilize in
their communities. We organize in all 3,413 counties across the country,
through the state parties and from the grassroots, and we seek to impact
down-ballot races and build the Democratic resistance to the corrupt, dangerous
Trump-Republican agenda.

The Democratic National Committee is looking to hire a
Director of Letters (email and direct mail) to run one of the largest and most
active grassroots mobilization programs in politics. You will be responsible
for planning, writing, and executing grassroots campaigns using fundraising and
mobilization tactics to achieve our ambitious goals, including raising tens of
millions of dollars in grassroots donations from as many Americans as possible.
You’ll be responsible for running the first truly integrated email and direct
mail marketing program in politics. To succeed, you’ll need to relentlessly
pursue excellence in all written communications. You’ll hire and manage a team
of writers, and help them achieve their writing career goals. Be ready to work
extraordinarily hard; this isn't a 9-5 sort of job.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Run the first truly
integrated email and direct mail marketing program in politics
- Be responsible for all
direct response copy reaching end users through email and direct mail
- Innovate how to best
reach and mobilize our grassroots over email and in direct mail and tell a
story about the work of the Democratic National Committee that is coherent
and integrated across all channels
- Create and direct
overall strategy and planning (long-term and short-term) for
mobilization campaigns, including execution of complex segmentation and
optimization programs, while ensuring the highest standard of quality
- Run one of the largest
and most complex email lists in politics. You’ll be responsible to
accuracy in targeting and segmentation
- Manage a large and
complex testing and optimization program in consultation with our
mobilization analytics team
- Produce daily, monthly,
yearly, and cycle-long projections and ensure that these fundraising and
mobilization goals are met
- Manage a complex email
and direct mail calendar and navigate competing organizational priorities
- Produce clean,
professional user experiences on tight timelines, and with coordination
across our engineering team and non-technical departments
- Serve as subject matter
expert in the digital and marketing fields and represent the Democratic
National Committee at speaking events
- Oversee the trainings of
hundreds of practitioners on best practices in fundraising and
mobilization
ABOUT YOU:
- 6 or more years’ experience on an email or direct
marketing program for an electoral campaign, advocacy organization or
non-profit; or working in a high-level position for a major digital
organizing program
- Expert organizing and campaigning knowledge; you should
have deep and demonstrable experience in email/digital organizing,
communication, and fundraising best practices
- Experience managing a team of creative producers. You
should know how to build a team, cultivate teamwork, and inspire others to
excellent
- Must be a great editor; you can take a rough draft with
a great idea and turn it into an email that can be sent out to millions of
supporters
- Excellent
writing, editing, and proofreading skills; you should have an eagle-eye
for typos and errors and have a deep understanding of how to inspire
people to action using the written word
- Strong,
sharp, and personable writing style
- You must be in DC or be willing to relocate to the
Washington, D.C. area
Preferred Experience:
- 3 or more years managing a national email program
- Experience
managing a digital program for an electoral campaign, advocacy
organization, or social justice or non-profit organization
- Familiarity
with online organizing platforms and/or website CMS, CRM, and/or mass
email systems (e.g. Blue State Digital, Convio, ActionKit)
