Field Director – Helping to Build a Climate Justice Movement

Alliance for Jobs and Clean Energy, Seattle

 

The Alliance for Jobs and Clean Energy is a Washington State coalition of more than 40 organizations and thousands of individuals dedicated to building a popular movement to reduce global warming pollution, strengthen our economy and communities, and ensure that all Washington families have a better future.

 

We are committed to building a durable, diverse climate justice movement, with the initial goal of winning a state ballot initiative in 2018 that reduces carbon emissions, funds a “just transition” to a clean renewable energy economy, while leveraging investments in renewable energy development, mass transit, infrastructure and water and forest resiliency.

 

Field Director Primary Responsibilities

 

The primary responsibility of the Field Director in 2017 is to lead the development and execution of a statewide field plan that positions the coalition to launch a voter initiative in early 2018. The Field director will work alongside of a Campaign Coordinator and will report directly to the AJCE Governance Committee.  Working closely with Governance Committee members and Steering Committee member organizations the Field Director will direct the work of staff from steering committee organizations that are assigned to the effort, and hire and supervise organizing staff as positions get funded by the Governance Committee.

 

The Field Director will:

 

·       Create, develop, and maintain relations with diverse coalition members;

·       coordinate public actions and events to promote AJCE and foster public support;

·       represent AJCE at public meetings and public forums as assigned by Governance Committee;

·       promote AJCE to community activists and leaders, and encourage their involvement;

·       collaborate effectively with staff and partners in developing targets and deliverables that are required for AJCE’s success;

·       work with staff and partner organizations to:

o   identify all communities and geographic areas that need to be included in the field plan;

o   develop a comprehensive field campaign strategy to recruit, train, and develop the leadership of climate justice captains in all of the identified communities and areas; the strategy also will include the formation and development of local committees of climate justice captains;

o   work with communications staff to develop a robust communications plan, including communications materials in all appropriate languages and popular education materials for use in developing the leadership and skills of climate justice captains;

o   organize public actions and mobilizations to raise awareness about the urgent need for climate justice and the campaign;

o   cultivate and maintain relationships with activists, advocates and elected leaders at the local and state level.

 

The Field Director will report to the Governance Committee and will work closely with the Governance Committee to:

 

·       ensure that AJCE and its allies are working diligently to achieve the 2017 goals;

·       confirm that AJCE is at all times engaging frontline communities along with other vital constituencies;

·       regularly evaluate progress in the work plan;

·       be a part of developing a plan for 2018 and making strategic decisions about strategy, staffing, and fundraising;

 

Required Skills and Experience

 

·       Minimum of 5 years of leadership and managerial experience in grassroots non-profit, labor, community or political organization.

·       Proven success in leading and managing complex labor, community, or political campaigns.

·       Demonstrated capability to work closely with a wide range of allied organizations spanning different cultures and geographies.

·       Ability to supervise and collaborate with a wide range of individuals from different organizations and cultures.

·       A sincere passion and commitment to social, economic, racial, and environmental justice.

·       Critical thinking and problem solving skills to assess obstacles, problems, and threats and recommend actionable solutions.

·       Relentless drive, tenacity and a willingness to do whatever it takes to advance our mission and values.

·       Attention to detail and strong follow-through and self-direction on assignments.

·       Ability to work effectively with strong personalities, peers, public officials, and allies.

·       Driver’s license and willingness to work long and irregular hours; significant travel throughout the state will be required.

 

Desired Skills and Experience:

 

·       Strong racial, gender, and economic justice analysis.

·       History of community and coalition organizing especially in underrepresented communities (immigrant/refugee, LGBTQI, low-income, etc.)

·       Excellent written and verbal communication skills

 

Salary and Benefits

 

Salary range $ 80,000 - $ 100,000 a year.
