About the Texas Organizing Project (TOP): Founded in 2009, TOP, has become the leading statewide organizing group in Texas, advancing racial and economic justice through community and electoral organizing. Our programs are anchored in the three largest metro regions of the state, Houston, Dallas and San Antonio.  We have a base of over 100,000 members and supporters who are reflective Texas’ growing population - people of color, low-moderate income families.  Through on the ground organizing, grassroots leader trainings, direct action, policy advocacy and electoral engagement we have made gains in policy solutions and public investments in neighborhood infrastructure, family sustaining jobs, affordable housing, community schools, health access and immigrant rights. TOP also runs the largest independent grassroots electoral field operation in the state, activating over 200,000 voters of color each election cycle.

 

Position Summary: Texas Organizing Project is seeking a talented and dedicated Immigration Organizer to build our organization through helping drive a campaign for immigrant rights in Bexar County. The ideal candidate is an experienced community organizer who is also a coalition-builder and strategist and believes deeply in the importance of building community leadership, capacity and power.  The Immigration Organizer will work in partnership with other staff and leaders to together drive campaign strategy and execution. S/he will be responsible for working with community leaders to execute a sophisticated campaign plan, coordinate related activities and efforts of allies to advance our campaign priorities and establish the basis for longer-term, ongoing work in our county. S/he must be able to organize and effectively communicate at all levels – with grassroots community people as well as established community leaders and policy experts. The Immigration Organizer will report directly to the Immigrant Rights Campaign Coordinator and will also work closely with existing community leaders, community organizers and core partners in building TOP as an organization.

Job Qualifications

A successful candidate will have experience in community; take initiative independently and able to work in a collaborative, fluid team environment; commitment to social justice and immigrant rights from the grassroots up, and building the leadership of directly affected individuals as vital messengers and leaders in their communities.

 

Key Areas of Responsibility

• Build a base of TOP members, the majority of whom are directly impacted by immigration issues, who will participate in demanding changes from decision makers and creating the political climate that allows for those changes to be adopted. 
  
• Using a campaign committee structure, recruit, turn out, and develop community leaders across a variety of low and moderate income neighborhoods of color.
  
• Execute a sophisticated and winning campaign strategy by working with community leaders, staff, and allies. 
  
• Identify hot organizing issues that members want to organize around. 
  
• Organize direct actions, events, meetings, and other tactics to move the campaign forward on a regular basis. 
  
• Coordinate campaign messaging, traditional media work, mass communications, and digital organizing with TOP’s communications department. 
  
• Regularly communicate the campaign’s progress to our members, staff, and partners. 
  
• Work with the existing database (VAN) to track members, participation and progress towards achieving success.
  
• Develop and manage relationships with partner organizations to move the campaign forward. This may include joint strategy meetings, joint actions or other events, etc. 
  
• Manage and develop relationships with key stakeholders and decision makers. 
  
• Enhance our reputation and brand, and promote our values. 
  
• Collaborate, support and work on other campaigns as necessary. 
  
• Other duties, as required.
  

 

Qualifications:

• Excellent community organizing skills, strategizing, and execution of organizing campaigns 
  
• Passion and commitment to social, economic, and racial justice 
  
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines, and working in a fluid and fast-paced environment 
  
• Collaborative and team-oriented work style 
  
• Personal interest and passion for leadership development of grassroots immigrant leaders and engaging new communities in social justice and immigrant rights work 
  
• Critical thinking and problem solving skills 
  
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills

• Fulltime access to a car 
  
• Fluency in English and Spanish (strong written and verbal communication skills in both languages); 
  
• Computer competency – Word, ability to design outreach materials; Internet required; Experience in working with database systems a plus. 
  
• Ability to work irregular hours including nights and occasional weekends (position is full-time salaried FLSA-exempt)
