Title:                            Director of Organizing

Reports to:                  Executive Director

Salary:                         Mid $60,000s to High $70,000s commensurate with qualifications. 

Position Basis:            Full-time, overtime-exempt

Location:                     Raleigh, NC preferred – Exceptional candidates considered for remote work

In response to disproportionately high levels of unemployment and low wage work in Black communities, the National Black Worker Center Project (NBWCP) launched in 2011.  NBWCP is a national network of Black worker centers. We support and incubate worker centers who empower Black workers to advance their rights and improve the quality of jobs in key employment sectors. We provide education about the impacts of low-wage work and unemployment on Black communities, and work to prevent racial discrimination in hiring and other employment practices and policies.  Through our network we intervene in the labor market to improve racial and economic employment conditions. Our network is comprised of membership-based, and member-driven organizations that utilize a combination of leadership development, organizing, policy advocacy, and strategic communications to build power to address the black job crisis.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

This position is responsible for leading and directing the next phase of the NBWCP’s organizing program. This position requires someone with significant labor, political and/or community organizing, strategic campaign development, and supervisory experience.

SCOPE OF DUTIES:

  • Partner as a member of the senior staff body to develop and implement long-term strategic growth plan for NBWCP’s affiliate network
  • Supervises and develops mission-aligned organizing staff around national organizing campaigns
  • Leads planning, strategy, and implementation of all organizing drives
  • Develops political and community support for organizing campaigns in accordance with 501(c)3 guidelines
  • Supervises staff in developing and maintaining organizing committees, including training, guidance, oversight and accountability of staff in performance of their duties
  • Leads in the development of a member organizing committee
  • Develops uniform standards for review and evaluation of campaigns
  • Ensures the tracking, reporting and analysis on all membership activity in their purview
  • Develops recommended budgets, allocates resources effectively and plans and implements program activities as appropriate
  • Acts as a spokesperson with allied organizations, community groups and media
  • Other duties as may be required

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the supervision of the Executive Director or their designee.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least five years of experience-preferably running campaigns, mobilizing, organizing, and running recruitment drives, plus  
  • At least three years’ experience in a leadership or supervisory role
  • Digital organizing experience is a plus
  • Comfortable with nontraditional routes to mobilizing, organizing, and leadership development
  • Experience with VAN and other organizing databases
  • Excellent project management skills, including managing and meeting many and varying deadlines, ability to lead and work with a team, program planning and administrative skills
  • Knowledge of Black workers, the workplace, and racial justice issues
  • Excellent interpersonal skills as demonstrated by the ability to relate, establish, and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Adept at leading and motivating workers in necessary struggles, including a dedication to Black people, workers’ rights and social justice
  • Deep alignment with NBWCP’s mission and values
  • Excellent analytical and judgment skills as demonstrable by the ability to assess information and evidence and act strategically
  • Effective facilitating and organizing meeting skills
  • Working knowledge of computer programs including Word, e-mail, accessing the Internet, and databases
  • Some weekends, evening and travel may be required
  • Required to have a valid driver’s license, automobile insurance and a working automobile

SALARY & BENEFITS:
