to Me
Hi, I'm helping the Patriotic Millionaires find a Social Media Manager. I've include the job description, which has been revised recently, below my signature line.

The salary range for the role is $58-70k, and the job will be based in DC.

This role would be a good fit for a social media pro with an eye for design, a metrics-driven approach, and a passion for economic justice.

If you have questions or are interested in applying, please let me know.

Matt Lockshin
(he, his)

Sent from Victoria, BC --  the ancestral, traditional and unceded territory of the Lekwungen speaking peoples, the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations.

In 2010, a few dozen millionaires came together in Washington with a simple message and an earnest request: “Please raise our taxes!”

Since then, the Patriotic Millionaires have worked to build a more stable, prosperous, and inclusive nation by promoting public policies based on the “first principles” of equal political representation, a guaranteed living wage for all working citizens, and a fair tax system.

Over the last two years the Patriotic Millionaires have put a strong emphasis on the expansion of our social media presence through Facebook and Twitter. While our social platforms have seen impressive growth, we are looking for a Social Media Manager to join our fun, energetic team, and take our social media game to the next level.

If you’re a social media pro with an eye for design, a metrics-driven approach, and a passion for economic justice, please read on!

ABOUT THE ROLE:

We’re first and foremost a communications advocacy group, so the more people talking about and engaging with our work and the work of our allies, the better. Social media is one of the primary distribution channels to enable that.

As the Social Media Manager, you will own our social media strategy, oversee and carry out its implementation, help create compelling content, and be responsible for growing and deepening engagement with our social media audience using a creative but still metrics-driven approach.  You’ll also need to be a resource for our allies and coalition partners.

More specifically, you will:

  • Manage our social media channels, ensuring the social media tactics and strategies we use align with our larger communication and advocacy goals.

  • Take ownership of our digital voice by writing compelling and creative social media content.

  • Conceptualize and work with the Creative Director to produce engaging graphics and multimedia content (memes/gifs/photo stories/short, minimally edited videos/etc.) to amplify our work -- ideally in a way that piggybacks on current events, pop culture, and relevant social media conversations.

  • Oversee longer-term production of visual content such as infographics and videos.

  • Collect, track, and analyze our metrics with an eye toward increasing engagement and growing our audience -- and then use that information to inform tactics, content creation, and the strategic direction for our social media campaigns.

  • Engage in social listening to identify strategic opportunities to engage with emerging online conversations.

  • Stay on top of new digital tactics, trends, and tools, and lead the adoption of those that will best help us increase our audience or increase our engagement rates.

  • Build and maintain relationships with the social media practitioners at allied organizations; and play an active role in coordinating coalition-wide Twitterchats, Twitterstorms, and other collaborative efforts.

You will also have much lighter social media responsibilities -- which will take approximately 30% of your time -- for two sister organizations that share staff (including leadership) with Patriotic Millionaires. One of these brands (Cleanup Carl) focuses on similar issues as Patriotic Millionaires, and the other one (the Business Initiative for Health Policy) focuses on supporting Medicare for All.

While you may need to do any of the duties above at some point for these sister organizations, the volume of content created for these brands will be lower, the goals for them will be much more modest and you will be provided with additional staff support (e.g. the Creative Director will handle most of the graphic and multimedia content;  brand managers will help with social listening, content ideas and brand voice; other staff will assist with some of the text-based content contreation and editing; etc.).

Finally, while this isn’t initially a management role, there is a lot of room to grow and for the Social Media Manager (if so desired) to hire someone to manage within the first 12 months, and build and lead a department within a few years.

QUALIFICATIONS:

You might be a great fit for this role if:

  • You’re an excellent writer and social media strategist who has at least two years of experience* using social media in an organizational context to engage people and mobilize them to take action.

  • You have solid design chops. You don’t need to be a graphic designer, but you should have an eye for design and at least some ability to use software like Photoshop or Illustrator, meme & gif generators, and/or apps like Canva.

  • You can come up with creative and actionable ideas for attention-grabbing memes and graphics.

  • You’re comfortable with social media metrics and analytics such as Facebook Insights, Twitter Insights, and Google Analytics, and know how to use them to inform social media strategy and tactics.

  • You have an analytical mindset and excellent critical thinking skills,

  • You track the developments in social media and think critically about the best ways to utilize them in your work.

  • You’re an accountable self-starter with a high degree of initiative who can take an idea and run with it, while also keeping team members in the loop to ensure they provide feedback at the right points in the process.

  • You can both give and receive feedback well, and you can work cooperatively with staff, allied organizations and the public.

  • You can meet strict deadlines, and can handle multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment without letting things fall through the cracks.

  • You have a passion for economic justice, and you’d be excited to take the social media trends of the day and translate them into relevant content and executable tactics that advance our narratives, showcase our work, and engage our audiences.

*= “Experience” does not have to be full-time, paid experience.

Although not required, a strong candidate may have some of the following:

  • Three or more years of campaign, advocacy, or electoral experience on a digital or communications team.

  • A record of growing and engaging large audiences on social media channels, and/or a record of managing high-profile social media accounts.

  • A finger on the pulse of trending conversations, current events and/or pop culture, and the ability to leverage these dynamics to cut through the noise on social media.

  • Experience with third-party social media tools and analytics packages such as ActionSprout, Crowdtangle, HootSuite, TweetDeck, Sysomos, Keyhole, Radian6, etc.

  • Experience with a wide range of social media platforms, and an understanding of what their relative strengths and weaknesses are in terms of goals and audiences.

  • Experience with video-editing software like Final Cut Pro.

  • Experience managing a digital advertising budget or executing a digital advertising campaign.

  • Experience managing graphic designers, coders and/or videographers to produce content on spec, on time and on budget.

  • A working understanding of the policy and political landscape of major economic issues currently facing the country, including but not limited to tax reform, the minimum wage, campaign finance reform, and Medicare for All.

In addition, Patriotic Millionaires is closed in the week between Christmas and New Year’s, during which time emergency coverage of social media accounts is shared among the staff.
