The Oregon Fair Trade Campaign (ORFTC) is seeking a trade justice organizer to assist in our current district-by-district campaign against the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). ORFTC is a statewide coalition of labor, environmental and human rights organizations working together on international trade and investment policy. The Trade Justice Organizer’s primary responsibility is the successful execution of ORFTC’s legislative campaign plans, which relies heavily upon volunteer recruitment, leadership training and list maintenance, as well as coalition development and fundraising. The organizer will work with labor, environmental, family farm, consumer and other social justice organizations to educate and mobilize community leaders and constituents to participate meaningfully in the TPP debate and secure Congress members’ opposition.
Responsibilities:
Meeting with the leadership of various organizations to solicit their involvement
Convening organizational leaders via face-to-face meetings and/or conference calls
Recruiting, training and supporting interns and volunteers
Convening regional and statewide planning meetings, training opportunities and leadership development activities with volunteers
Creating monthly e-newsletter
Maintaining/expanding our social media presence
Organizing protests, phonebanks, press events and community forums
Recruiting constituents to bird-dog at Congress members’ Town Hall events and fundraisers
Expanding and maintaining ORFTC’s “Trade Action Network” volunteer list, and ensuring that all TAN volunteers are contacted by phone at least three times a year
Expanding and maintaining ORFTC’s individual giving program
Presenting to unions and other organizations with legislative updates and fundraising requests, and developing new systems for personalized communication with member organizations and allied groups
Other work as needed
Qualifications: Qualified candidates will be highly-organized self-starters who want to defeat the biggest corporate power grab of the millennium.
A successful candidate will:
Have a deep commitment to and passion for social and economic justice
Work well independently, be unafraid of tasks large and small, be able to meet deadlines
Have at least three years organizing experience, ideally with legislative campaigns
Have experience working with volunteers
Have experience with grassroots fundraising
Have strong communication skills and be comfortable with public speaking and writing
Have effective time management skills, including demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects
Be comfortable working with labor unions, environmental groups and family farm organizations and people of diverse races, sexualities and political backgrounds
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive environments
Have ability to travel frequently in performance of the duty of the job
Have ability to work and long and extended hours when necessary to accomplish organization's mission
Strong pluses include:
Bachelor’s degree in Labor Studies, Political Science or International Relations
Knowledge of trade policy and fluency in languages beyond English
Strong social media skills: Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, ect
