ProgressNow is the national umbrella organization of 23 affiliated state-based organizations dedicated to
giving a clear and strong voice to progressive policies within their states. Our steering committee is
looking for the right Executive Director to be the voice and face of a new affiliate in South Carolina.
The Executive Director of Better South Carolina will be responsible for the organization’s overall direction
and management. Along with the Board of Directors, she/he will work to establish and achieve the
mission, vision and strategic goals of the organizations within the Better South Carolina family.
Better South Carolina will work in coalition with local, regional and state organizations but maintain its
independence in order to respond quickly and freely. The Executive Director will have a major role in
selecting the Board of Directors for both a 501(c)(3) and a 501(c)(4) organization.
The current steering committee will raise funds for the first year’s salary of the Executive Director prior to
her/his hire; and, will assist the Executive Director in raising a first twelve-month budget of approximately
$164,000.
The ideal candidate is:
● an entrepreneur who thrives on the 60+ hour-per-week job of building an electrifying organization
from the bottom up.
● an exceptional writer and content creator.
● a smart, quick thinker who is rigorously accurate, can absorb and extract information rapidly, and
can express her/himself concisely with finesse and humor that is not cutting or facetious.
● an experienced spokesperson for broadcast and print opportunities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
● Ensure that the organization has a long-range strategy, operational plan, and benchmarks that
achieve the organization’s mission and ensure its long-term sustainability.
● Direct the day-to-day efforts of the organization, including all actions, program development,
message development, media relations, website updates, newsletters, social media,
communications, and fundraising.
● Work with the steering committee to recruit and develop a Board of Directors for both 501(c)3 and
501(c)4 organizations.
● Establish governance documents and Board descriptions; engage the Boards in strong working
partnerships to lead the organization.
● Work with the steering committee and Board of Directors to establish and implement an
organizational budget and sound financial guidelines.
● Together with the steering committee and Board of Directors, oversee fundraising efforts and
ensure resources are raised to support the annual budget. Work with the Boards to develop
programs to ensure the long-term sustainability of the organization including a donor cultivation
plan and online fundraising program.
● Develop and maintain state and national relationships with progressive allies and partners, and
look for mutually beneficial partnerships that advance Better South Carolina’s issues, strategies,
and goals.
● Serve as the spokesperson for Better South Carolina and provide thought leadership on threats
or opportunities related to progressive issues.
● Represent Better South Carolina's point of view to agencies, organizations, and the general
public so that it has a strong, positive image in the community.
● Work with other organizations in the ProgressNow network to advance the national work of its
members.
● Grow the organization in future years to include additional staff and a larger budget.
Requirements:
● Bachelor’s degree, preferably in communications, political science, or journalism
● 8+ years in the nonprofit sector with 4+ in a management-level position
● Proven success as a fundraiser
● Understanding of federal, state, and local fiscal compliance
● Maintain a strong working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field
● Exceptional written and spoken communications skills
● Budget management
