Daily Kos is the nation's largest liberal online political community, news organization, and activism hub. Powered by millions of dedicated activists, we’re transforming media and organizing by empowering regular Americans to reshape politics.
We are seeking a Media Strategy Director to help build and manage the site’s external communications effort. Those efforts include crafting the site’s public image and brand, expanding our impact in the media, managing the training and promotion of our staff for on-air opportunities, and otherwise fielding media inquiries. This is an executive-team position, reporting directly to the founder/CEO/publisher while coordinating as needed with the senior communications advisor.
Responsibilities:
One simple, and yet not-so-simple job: Tell the Daily Kos story to the world. Daily Kos has been historically remiss in communicating the what, why, and how of the site and its efforts. We have an amazing story to tell. We need someone to help us tell it, using all available tools and resources.
This responsibility encompasses everything from:
- Developing and executing an organizational communications plan
- Fielding and directing incoming press inquiries
- Training and preparing select Daily Kos writers and representatives to interact with reporters and make media appearances
- Pitching and placing select writers and representatives (and their materials) as media resources, experts, and personalities
- Drafting press releases and pitching stories
- Booking Daily Kos spokespeople on TV, radio, podcasts, etc.
- Working across departments to support all departmental objectives and organizational goals
- Performing other duties as needed.
Qualifications:
- Deep knowledge and understanding of current American politics
- Extensive and broad political media network
- Full understanding of modern media ecosystem and experience using media to tell a
- story
- Experience dealing with print media
- Experience in media training and preparing staff for media appearances
- Experience with television booking
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Demonstrated skills in message framing and development of effective media and
- communications strategies in a digital environment
- Ability to become an evangelist for Daily Kos and tell the organization’s story in a
- powerful and captivating way
- Solid research, analytical, and critical thinking skills
- Experience managing a comms team is a plus
