The Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project (ASAP) sees a future where the United States welcomes individuals who come to our borders fleeing violence. We work alongside asylum seekers to make this vision a reality. Our model has three components: online community support, emergency legal aid, and nationwide systemic reform. We represent individuals who have arrived at the Mexico-U.S. border to seek asylum, regardless of where they are currently located. Location:  Remote workplace, location flexible within the U.S.


The Immigration Staff Attorney will provide remote legal assistance and representation to asylum seekers in removal proceedings. The Immigration Staff Attorney will also help manage ASAP’s private online communities to provide pro se legal information to over 4,000 asylum seekers, including asylum seekers currently affected by the border crisis. 


Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide know-your-rights information and referrals to asylum seekers in ASAP’s online communities; communicate regularly with community members.
  • Provide remote, limited scope legal assistance to asylum seekers in removal proceedings, including filing motions to change venue, asylum applications, and notices of appeal.
  • Draft briefs, motions, letters, and other legal documents for clients in removal proceedings.
  • Maintain client communication.
  • Develop pro se written and video resources.
  • Maintain careful and accurate case management records.
  • Supervise the legal work of paralegals, interns, and volunteers.
  • Perform administrative tasks as necessary.

Qualifications 

  • Spanish and English fluency are required.
  • Must have a J.D. and be a member of a bar association, or have an application pending.
  • Asylum or immigration law experience strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to think creatively, take initiative, and be flexible in the face of challenges.
  • Strong research, writing, and oral communication skills.
  • Commitment to ASAP’s mission.

Salary and Benefits
Salary for this position is between $60K and $65K depending on qualifications. ASAP offers an excellent benefit package including health insurance coverage at no cost, 401K matching, generous paid vacation, personal, and sick days, and paid parental leave.
