Description

The manager of the Racial and Economic Justice Initiative of the National Center for Transgender Equality leads and shapes NCTE’s ongoing work for transgender people of color and those with low or no-income. This position will be ideally by filled by someone with skills in both policy analysis and community organizing. The staff member will work to implement and manage the organization’s Racial and Economic Justice Initiative, working with other NCTE staff, as well as ensuring that all of NCTE’s work is undertaken while keeping in mind its effectiveness in supporting transgender people of color and those with low or no income. This is a unique opportunity to join a cutting-edge social justice organization to advance transgender rights in a bold way, informed by an understanding that racial and economic justice is essential to advancing trans rights. This position is based in Washington, DC.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Policy analysis: Analyze local, state, and federal policies and legislation related to transgender rights from a racial and economic justice viewpoint, on a variety of topics including nondiscrimination, healthcare access, identity documents, housing, education, immigration, and criminal justice.
  • Community engagement: Continuously seek and destill input from transgender people of color on how NCTE's work should best reflect the values of racial and economic justice
  • Project management: Manage projects of the Racial and Economic Justice Initiative 
  • Recruitment: Work to ensure diverse participation in all aspcts of NCTE's advocacy work including advocacy programs and educational events
  • Technical assistance: Provide technical assistance to state and local activists and organizations seeking to better their work for transgender people of color and those with low and no-income
  • Manage allied work on the national level: Manage NCTE's suppot for legislative and policy proposals prioritized by allied civil, human, and economic rights organizations and coalitions
  • Develop public messaging: Work collaboratively with communications staff to develop messages relating to NCTE's policy goals, issues of importance to transgender people, and racial and economic justice
  • Speak to the media: Speak on behalf of NCTE regarding policy issues and/or racial and economic justice
Qualifications: 
  • Experience in policy analysis: Experience in advocating for or analyzing policies or legislation at the local, state or federal level, with two years of experience preferred, which may include unpaid/volunteer work
  • Project leadership: Experience in planning, leading, and managing projects, involving multiple people in various roles
  • Creativity and Innovation: Ability to see opportunities and develop new approaches for organizing across difference
  • Self-direction: Ability to take initiative and be self-sufficient in a small organization environment
  • Communications: Skilled in speaking directly but sensitively about issues of race, class, gender, sexuality, and other aspects of diversity and oppression within an intersectional framework. Must be willing to serve as a bridge-builder between people and organizations who may not see issues related to racial and economic justice similarly
  • Collaborative spirit: Ability to work as an integral part of a team of hard-working, assertive, and energetic professionals, giving and taking input with a variety of staff
  • Coaching: Interest in and ability to coach, support, and advise others in being allies in racial and economic justice work
  • Prioritization: Ability to independently set and meet goals, prioritize, plan, manage, and complete work on deadline
  • Time management: Execellent organizational and time-management skills, detail-oriented, including ability to manage multiple tasks independently
  • Commitment to social justice: A deep and nuanced understanding of issues affecting transgender people, racial and economic justice, and systems of inter-connected oppressions is critical
  • Education level: No specific educational degree is required

Salary and Benefits

Salary range for this position is competitive and based in part on the candidate’s experiences and skills. NCTE offers a robust benefits package including dental, vision, and health insurance, pre-tax transit benefits, and matching retirement program, in addition to federal holidays and ten paid vacation days in the first year of employment.

Location/Hours: 

The Racial and Economic Justice Initiative Manager (or Policy Analyst/Counsel) works out of our national office in Washington, DC. The position will involve occasional travel.
