A Seattle-based environmental advocacy organization is hiring a Communications Associate. 

Position Description

The Communications Associate is responsible for authoring communications for audiences including elected officials, journalists, donors, and the general public. This person is responsible for generating favorable coverage of organization priorities, including developing relationships with reporters, editorial boards, and Coalition stakeholders to place op-eds and columns in publications across the state.

The Communications Associate reports to the Senior Policy Director.

Communications

  • Author key public facing materials including releases, op-eds, editorials, feature stories, blogs and radio feeds and interviews
  • Coordinate directly with agencies, elected officials, and partners to maximize media opportunities
  • Plan and execute press calls and other earned media events statewide
  • Build and maintain relationships with reporters and bloggers, including acting as spokesperson around key news events
  • Establish talking points and top-level message strategy to ensure partners communicate consistently
  • Design and execute a social media strategy across properties to promote key messages and advocate on behalf of priorities
  • Maintain regular cadence of communications with email list, including regular e-newsletter, action alerts, and other messages

Marketing

  • Write, edit, design and produce/distribute monthly e-news, annual report and other collateral as needed
  • Set clear goals for all online communications and analyze progress using analytics
  • Assist policy and outreach staff in writing speeches and talking points for senior staff, board members and elected officials
  • Assist the Development Director in writing grants, direct mail and online appeals as needed
  • Produce short annual fundraising event video

Branding

  • Help define and maintain a strong voice across social media, email communications, and other avenues
  • Direct and assist staff in defining and maintaining brand and visual identity

Required Skills and Experience

  • 1-3 years experience in communications or new media
  • Background in advocacy, campaigns, politics, marketing, or public relations
  • Strong writing skills in a broad range of styles
  • Experience working in a communications position, preferably directly with press on and off the record
  • Experience managing and drafting digital communications

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Washington state ties preferred but not required
  • Basic web design and HTML familiarity a plus
  • Graphic design familiarity a plus
  • Donor-centered communications
