The Chapter Organizer acts as the lead organizer and field representative for the DC Chapter. The organizer builds grassroots power, by leading the implementation of organizing campaigns that engage the community, recruit and train new leaders, and engage people to achieve Chapter conservation goals. The organizer develops and carries out organizing strategies and activities for campaigns and programs. Participates in the development of strategies and priorities.

The Chapter Organizer coordinates a broad, volunteer‑based citizen education effort on conservation issues throughout the region. Collaborates in development of organizing campaign or program strategy and implementation, including developing strong grassroots networks. Identifies and develops volunteers to take on the role of team leaders and build grassroots power and networks. Identifies and builds alliances with other organizations which can influence decision-makers.

The Chapter Organizer is responsible for providing Chapter management and administrative functions and assists with fundraising and member management.

Job Activities:

Responds to inquiries concerning membership, outings events, and environmental issues from the general public, members, and volunteers.  
Provides good public relations and customer service for the Club.  
Assists Chapter Chair and Volunteer leaders in coordinating meetings and preparing agendas.
Coordinates volunteer development programs, member outreach and services.  
Recruits and organizes volunteers.  
Compiles and maintains a directory of chapter and group leaders, issue activists, noting areas of interest and expertise.
Attends meetings in the community on related Club issues and maintains communications with other organizations.
Tracks and processes incoming donations. Manages donor/member database. 
Coordinates production of annual fundraising letters, assists with the individual giving program, and preparing materials and responses.
Works independently or with staff to develop strong Sierra Club committees and presence on campaign or programs.  
Collaborates in developing organizing campaign or program strategies.
Coordinates the identification, recruitment and organizing of volunteers both in Sierra Club and other groups around priority campaign. Seeks opportunities to advance the Sierra Club’s diversity initiatives through new partnerships and engagement strategies where appropriate.
Engages people and develops volunteer leadership in both social and environmental advocacy activities that will create strong environmental communities and build power at the community level. 
Develops and implements a variety of engagement strategies including on-line and face-to-face social networks to support Sierra Club cause.
Maintains and develops new partnerships with affinity groups who share many common goals and values. 
Develops positive working relationships with existing coalitions on campaign issues; works to build and sustain issue coalitions.
Identifies and develops volunteers who will take work as part of a team and take on the role of team leaders to build our grassroots power and networks  Helps those leaders succeed by training and coaching them how to strategize, organize, inspire and motivate.
Develops grass top networks and cultivates relationships with public officials. 
Lobbies public officials on issues of importance to Sierra Club.
Attends various issue committees and regional conservation meetings.       

Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.

Knowledge and Skills:

B.A./B.S. degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science or a closely related field (preferred).
Applicants must have at least 3+ years’ experience in electoral or issue organizing, preferable in the environmental field, that includes research and organizing campaigns, press relations and public speaking.
Experience with administering and supporting fundraising programs and working with individual donors.
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Prior experience and ability writing training and information materials.
Prior experience and knowledge of either the legislative or administrative process.
Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers and the public.
Ability to interact effectively with volunteers, members, staff and the public.
