Public Citizen’s Texas office
Public Citizen seeks a strategic and experienced leader to serve as Deputy Director for our Texas Office. The Deputy Director works with the Texas team and allied organizations to help lead and grow our work in the state and region, and represent the organization to the media, elected officials and allies. Based in Public Citizen’s Austin Texas office the Deputy Director works with the Director and the Texas Team to develop various grassroots, media and research projects, and identify new areas of opportunity for campaigns and priorities. The Deputy Director works with the Director to recruit and train staff as well as working closely on fundraising strategies and financial management
Specific Responsibilities:
Primarily responsible for the day-to-day coordination and management of a fast-paced, highly flexible advocacy, legislative, field, media and research operation.
Ensure effective communication, time management and task prioritization between the multifaceted elements of various campaigns, maximize the complementary skills of a team of 5 -10 personnel and volunteers in close cooperation with allies and coalitions.
Serve as supervisor of staff and as liaison to other Public Citizen divisions and Public Citizen’s President’s office when the Director is unavailable.
Recruit, hire, train and be involved with all personnel matters, including creating professional development plans; increasing staff skills and leadership capacity; conducting evaluations; and making decisions about probations, promotions and grievances, in consultation with the Director.
Work with the Director to shape policy priorities and support the Director – both as a management partner keeping an eye on the horizon and as a sounding board.
Work with the Director to develop an annual budget for the group and to oversee finances and legal issues relating to foundation grants, lobbying reporting and more.
Develop strategies with the Director to expand Texas’ field operation to build grassroots and grasstops action to achieve our goals, including electronic outreach programs.
Work with the Director and other staff to ensure professional, accurate and timely publication of key analyses, reports, fact sheets, testimony, and other important documents and dissemination of information, including overseeing efforts to keep website up-to-date and interesting.
Work with the Communications team and the Director to develop multifaceted communications strategies to further campaigns, including traditional print and broadcast media, New Media and website.
Work closely with the Director to conduct our fundraising program, which includes foundation outreach, grant writing and reporting; electronic solicitations; high donor outreach; organization of fundraising events; and a paid speakers’ bureau.
