The StudentsFirstNY team is looking for a talented,
passionate person to join us in our fight to protect the interests of children.
We are building a grassroots movement of parents, students, and concerned
citizens who are organized around one purpose: to put laws, policies and
leaders in place that will help provide every child in New York with a quality
education.
About the Position
The Organizer is responsible for identifying
potential parent members and training and developing them into school and community
leaders. The position reports directly to the Deputy Director of Organizing. The
ideal candidate is a leader in their community with a basic understanding of
education reform and charter schools, skilled at developing people as leaders
in their communities and experienced in executing local engagement actions.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify and build a list of potential
parent members in assigned region which is turned into a reliable parent
member force to mobilize around StudentsFirstNY’s priorities.
- Build and manage multiple parent
member relationships by regularly engaging parents through phone calls,
one-on-one meetings, voter registration initiatives.
- Educate parent members on StudentsFirstNY
priority issues, including charter schools, as well as the importance of
civic engagement and voting.
- Mobilize parent members to attend
meetings and engagement actions such as press conferences and rallies.
- Increase the level of engagement
of parent members turning them into community leaders on StudentsFirstNY’s
priorities capable of serving as spokespeople on these issues.
- Complete daily administrative
and reporting activities, including timely submission of timesheets, daily
data entry of field activities, and reports.
Candidate Profile
- Must be fully fluent in English
and Spanish.
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Self-motivated and willing to
work flexible schedule, including nights and weekends
- Proven time management skills
and experience meeting deadlines and the ability to manage multiple tasks
simultaneously
- Willing to travel throughout
New York City as needed to participate in meetings and events and
occasionally travel to Albany.
- Familiarity with local communities
in assigned region and working knowledge of New York City community
dynamics.
- A good sense of humor and a
strong interest in and commitment to education reform is a must.
