POSITION AVAILABLEDemocracy Organizer – Position located in Maryland; Full-time, Term

REPORTS TO: Executive Director

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Democracy Organizer will implement outreach plans for key policy campaigns, especially around money in politics and voting rights.  The Organizer will engage coalition partners and members of the Democracy Initiative in these campaigns, and will report regularly to the Democracy Initiative on progress. This is a temporary position; funding is guaranteed for 12 months with the potential to extend.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Engage Democracy Initiative organizations in the coalition and the campaigns in Maryland. Meet directly with key state and national member groups, and reach out to all members and affiliates active in the region.  Liaise between local coalitions and DI organizations to get their members involved in campaign activities (e.g. town halls, house parties, door knocking, phone banks etc.) Draft outreach materials and work closely with organizations to distribute them. Report on activities to DI leadership and member groups. Support campaign coalitions and DI members through outreach, meetings, and follow up. Garner grassroots support for reforms by mobilizing members and the public. Plan events to educate the public and decision-makers about democracy issues. Recruit volunteers and develop community leaders around core campaigns. Execute an online organizing and communications strategy (web, email, blogs). Plan media events to draw attention to the campaign and assist in working with local media. Assist with lobbying, fundraising and other organizational priorities as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:  1-3 years’ experience in policy or electoral campaigns. Demonstrated ability to engage the grassroots, speak and write compellingly about policy issues, and implement a campaign plan. Familiarity with the legislative process; ideally, familiarity with the Maryland legislature. Commitment to the public interest and Common Cause’s mission. Excellent speaking, writing, presentation, and critical analysis skills. Working knowledge and proficiency with social media tools including Facebook and Twitter; proficient with Microsoft Office. Demonstrated leadership and organizing ability. Strong interpersonal skills. Comfortable speaking to and engaging diverse audiences throughout the state. This position will require travel. Ability to work independently in a deadline-driven environment with competing priorities. Flexible, good sense of humor, self-starter and multi-tasker. Working knowledge of social media-i.e., Facebook and Twitter
