About us: Megaphone is a not-for-profit social justice PR firm. Our mission is to use public relations as a tool to diversify the media and politics. We partner with frontline communities, political campaigns, and impactful social justice groups to break through and win on a range of progressive issues. We provide high-level media relations, strategy, and training on a sliding scale, and 100% of our profits go towards subsidizing rates for smaller up and coming groups that match our mission.
Our team reflects the movement we are trying to build and support: we are a small but mighty group of women of color, queer folks, and people with disabilities. Our firm is majority women, majority LGBTQ, and majority people of color.
Position: We are looking for a Partner to lead Megaphone alongside our existing leadership team, which is comprised of one full time partner and two remote senior advisors. This is a full-time position based in Washington, DC.
Compensation: Salary range is $95,000 -$105,000/year depending on level and experience. We offer generous benefits including 100% employer-covered health/dental/vision insurance for employees and their dependents, flexible work environment, paid family leave, 401k, and a generous vacation policy.

Movement Leader -- You have a successful track record leading media-relations-oriented teams, projects, or organizations to success.
Fundraiser -- People want to pay you to do and lead things. You can attract partners or donors to ensure Megaphone meets our mission and goals.
Visionary -- You believe deeply in our mission to diversify the progressive movement, media, and politics using PR as a tool. You have a vision for how to build better communications infrastructure for the left.
Storyteller -- you can find the story through the weeds, and come up with new angles to help people understand and care about the big issues of our time.
Proven project manager -- you know how to manage complex projects and teams smoothly and efficiently. You inspire staff to do their best work.
Relationship builder -- you know how to quickly build connections by phone, email, or in-person. You have solid relationships within social justice movements or Democratic politics and understand how to build and maintain them.
Top-notch writer -- you can ghost write or edit an op-ed for a national outlet and turn around a quick snappy quote in a crisis.
Trainer -- You know are an engaging trainer ideally with experience training and drilling spokespeople for TV, radio, print, and general interviewing.
Media strategist -- you understand the modern media landscape and have an excellent track record securing top-level media placements and/ or partnerships.
Passion -- you have a deep commitment to social justice.
A love for the news -- whether it’s your local paper or TMZ, CNN or Ebony, Telemundo or Autostraddle.
In a typical month, you would:
Lead the organization, ensure it is running efficiently and that all our partners and team members are set up for success.
Plan for Megaphone’s future, inspire team members towards our mission, and work on a weekly and monthly basis to ensure we are on track for financial and organizational stability and growth. This includes bringing in new partners or funding.
Run partner calls and meetings to ensure our team is meeting key goals and benchmarks for success.
Manage team members and partner relationships, offer constructive strategic support, and ensure our partners successfully break through in the media.
Attract and train diverse up and coming voices in social justice and progressive politics to perform at a high level in media interviews.
Provide short and long term strategic guidance and messaging support to our diverse social justice partners on how to break through in a crowded media cycle.
Build relationships with partners, reporters, movement organizations and fellow staff.
Write, edit, and approve drafts of diverse press materials ranging from opinion pieces to statements and memos to communications plans.
We need you to have:
8-10+ years of experience in a combination of media relations, social justice, communications, journalism, and/or politics and government. At least 5 of those years in media relations or communications specifically.
Work experience in one or more of the following issue areas: racial justice, economic justice, candidate campaigns, criminal justice, climate change, labor, environment, reproductive rights, housing, LGBTQ rights, foreign policy, tax justice, immigrant justice, voting rights, disability rights, working families issues, multi-issue progressive politics, etc.
Experience managing staff or teams to success.
We’d like you to have at least two of these:
Spanish language fluency.
Non-profit experience.
PR firm experience, and especially business development or partnerships experience, is a plus.
Political campaign or Congressional experience is a plus.
Intersectional movement experience.
Journalism experience.
Fundraising experience.
Experience building long-term media strategy campaigns.
Media training experience.
Travel: This position includes some travel, likely less than 10% of your time but more is possible depending on your interests and vision.
