The Opportunity

Emerge America and the Emerge affiliates share one mission: To increase the number of Democratic women leaders from diverse backgrounds in public office through recruitment, training, and providing a powerful network. Our vision: To change the face of power, politics, and leadership in this country in order to have policies that are responsive to all.

As the national umbrella organization, Emerge America’s role is to:

  • Elevate the importance of electing more Democratic women at every level of the ballot.
  • Empower our current alumnae and affiliates with support and capacity-building.
  • Expand our impact by replicating our success in new states.

As we look toward 2020, Emerge America is actively recruiting for a dynamic leader to strengthen our national partnerships and help our affiliates strategically recruit for key seats in their states. The Emerge America Political Director reports directly to the President and is a full-time position.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the mission of Emerge America to increase the number of Democratic women running for office at the national, state and local levels;
  • Improve and develop standardized tools and materials around recruitment to support the ongoing work of our state affiliates and to ensure consistency and standards throughout the network;
  • Develop a national recruitment plan and work in conjunction with affiliate directors and boards to strategically recruit for key legislative (or other seats depending on the state) seats throughout the year;
  • Leverage relationships with key allies and forge organizational partnerships that will enable us to recruit diverse and intersectional women who will have multiple platforms when running;
  • Maintain a cutting-edge knowledge of the impact of women on public policy and politics;
  • Serve as a trainer for our 16 states;
  • Make recommendations for new state targets based on political climates, polling, research, funding capacity, and other criteria for expansion;
  • Represent Emerge in key tables, coalitions and meetings with outside organizations;
  • Assist the President and affiliate leadership as needed on special projects.

Experience and Qualifications

  • At least three to five years of experience advancing a political program at a national and/or state organization;
  • An understanding of the national Democratic political community;
  • Strong writing and communication skills;
  • Experience with multifaceted planning processes;
  • Demonstrated flexibility in problem-solving;
  • Proven track record of excellent follow-through and accountability;
  • Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Knowledge of women’s political leadership issues and political experience;
  • Familiarity with database tools, NGPVAN, Basecamp, etc. a plus;
  • Campaign experience a plus;
  • Training experience and/or the interest in developing strong training skills a plus.

Job Details

Travel, evening and weekend work are required for this position. In particular, this position requires up to 50% travel to visit affiliates. Salary commensurate with experience/Benefits provided. Emerge America is based in San Francisco. Candidates should be comfortable working/reporting to the President remotely should they be based in D.C.
