Hi everyone,

The Motor City Freedom Riders (metro Detroit bus riders' union) are hiring a Membership and Communications Manager.

Location: Detroit, MI
Date: early to mid October
Hours: Part-time, beginning at 10 hours/week with intent to increase them after several months
Pay rate: $18/hour

The Membership and Communications Manager will report directly to the Co-Chairs of the Board of Directors and work to manage and develop our growing membership base in collaboration with the Lead Organizer. The initial contract will be for three months, renewable upon mutual agreement of both parties. 

Responsibilities

  • Manage the membership/contact database using Action Builder and develop a member/contact engagement strategy as the organization continues to grow.
  • Coordinate Member Engagement committee and support its goals of increasing volunteer involvement in the organization, reconnecting with members who have become inactive, and recruiting members to attend our transit organizing training.
  • Collect membership dues and renewals, and encourage members to contribute recurring monthly dues to support the organization’s fundraising efforts. 
  • Manage communications with members and oversee email marketing and social media platforms. Coordinate with Lead Organizer, Media Committee, and other volunteers to ensure consistent updates to social media platforms, website, and email newsletter.
  • Maintain a list of the organization’s contacts, including stakeholders, members of the media, public officials, and others.
  • Bi-weekly reporting to the Co-Chairs and Lead Organizer, and bi-monthly reporting to the Board of Directors. 
  • Handles miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned in pursuit of the above goals.

Skills and Experience

  • Experience in database management, communications, and/or nonprofit administration.
  • Familiarity with membership management platforms like Action Builder, NationBuilder, Wild Apricot, or Your People a plus.
  • Familiarity with communication and file sharing tools like Slack, Google Groups, Google Drive, and Zoom.
  • Strong organizational skills and effective at working with and coordinating other team members.
  • Interest in public transportation with a particular emphasis on social and economic justice.

Compensation

$18/hour, approximately 10 hours/week initially with the possibility of increasing hours as additional funding becomes available
