Communications Director for the Climate Action Campaign
Climate Action Campaign,
a national coalition of environmental and public health groups, is seeking a
Communications Director. The ideal candidate is an experienced communications professional,
with seasoned media relations, exceptional writing ability, superior
organizational and management skills and desire to work in a very
collaborative, coalition-based atmosphere.
The Communications Director plays a critical role in
the development of communications strategies and departmental management for a
coalition focused on spurring action at the federal and state levels to address
climate change. The position is a full-time employee of the campaign, manages
a current staff of three and several communications consulting firms and
reports to the Communications Team Lead.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a member of the campaign senior management team and
provide strategic counsel on campaign activities, including external and
internal communications, digital communications, event planning, field support
and customized product development.
- Manage
media relations with DC and national media outlets; fostering
relationships with print, broadcast and new
media journalists, editors and bloggers in the energy, environment, climate
change and affiliated subject areas.
- Coordinate
communications and drive relationship building with CAC member groups.
- Provide
media planning and support for partnerships and field events.
- Manage
the development, vetting and approvals of communications and digital materials
including talking points, press advisories and
releases, op-eds, memos, social media content and other materials.
- Direct
the creation, approval and dissemination of proactive communications, such as
the “Message of the Day” and other regularly published communication pieces.
- Draft and finalize high-level communications documents including
communications plans and reporting memos. Message development and special projects as needed.
- Oversee campaign’s specialty media program including building
relationships with African American and Latino media, and managing specialty
media consultants.
- Collaborate with communications staff of partner organizations
on earned media projects such as advertising launches, poll briefings, press
conferences and serve as their point of contact. Provide regular reports on
campaign activities on weekly and quarterly communications conference calls.
- Organize the communications team leadership internal
communications, weekly internal team meetings, agendas for communications
strategy sessions and weekly management team meetings, and other organization
activities.
- Manage communications support staff, daily and long term tasking,
project management and personnel matters.
- Ensure all reporting requirements are met on a timely basis.
- Identify and direct priority activities and manage requests for
communications support from CAC departments, allies, partners and affiliates.
Qualifications:
- At
least 7-8 years of professional experience in a campaign-style communications
position, including but not limited to:
- On
the record and off the record work with the media.
- Experience landing strategic media placements and dealing with reporters,
editors, editorial boards, columnists, bloggers, broadcast producers and
thought leaders.
- Very
strong writing and editing skills.
- Ability
to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced campaign environment.
- Experience
working in a coalition-based, or highly collaborative with partner
organizations, environment.
- Political
judgment to manage external and internal coalition reactions and response.
- Strong judgment
about press worthy campaign activities.
- Demonstrated
ability to set priorities effectively in a heavy workload, and project manage
and coordinate complex projects.
- Demonstrated
initiative, flexibility and creativity.
- The ability
to communicate priorities and decisions to colleagues in a clear, concise and
professional manner.

Campaign
The
Climate Action Campaign is designed to coordinate resources and strategy singularly
focused on organizing clean air and climate change action supporters in key
states and in raising the awareness of the need for addressing climate change
in communities across the country. The coalition coordinates national
political strategy, communications, and field operations across the country.
One of the primary goals is to build relationships with leaders in the public
health, faith, business, military, national security, local governments and
other communities to elevate their voices and demonstrate the broad base of
support for climate action.
